Ok...so got up early this morning to put the cars back together...also tried running her on prime...ran fine and got over 9000 at last in every gear. Now...new problem. On the way home was hitting 140k's just to test how she went...then she bogged and died. Been doing some searching on the board...seems a couple of other people have the same problem. Let her 'die', turned her over again and she started up fine again. Battery was dead this morning (don't know if that might help). Anyone figured out a definitive answer to the bog problem yet? Going to replace all the fuel lines this weekend...just in case.

:D Incidentally oz...that's JUST what mine sounds like...and have my first complaint...neighbpur through a tupperware at me this morning when I started her up at 7.30. Thinking if I keep this up I can collect a new set for the kitchen.

Ya sounds like you need to go through the rest of the fuel system now. Replace the lines, open and clean the frame petcock and the tank petcock, clean the screen on the tank petcock too. I bet that resolves your issue. When you have the frame petcock open look for tears in the diaphram. I always just run with mine on prime because I got tired of it starving out on the side of the road everytime I got on it. I think the diaphram is not opening enough to let the proper amount of fuel through.

Oh and the neighboor should be thanking you for waking them up so they do not sleep their life away  ;)

:thumb: I have not had any complaints....yet. +1 for running on prime all the time. Just pay attention to your trip meter. Reset at every fuel up. I can get to about 150-60 miles before I feel the need to fill up. May be able to get a tad further. That is with alot of spirited riding.

Ya I go about 100-120 miles before I fill up, it tops off with about 2.5 to 3 US gals (average about 40 MPG)

Sorry boys...in the good old republic of south africa, so we work in k's...and gas is insane...costed me 170 rand to fill the tank with 97 unleaded. That's about $17.12. Zeroed the trip meter, so going to establish my economy....with some seriously spirited riding.

You do not need 97 octane for a GS unless the compression ratio is non stock for some reason, mine runs fine on 89. Do you know what is th recommended octane rating for your S.A. version?

Over here we only have two options..93 or 97...since i'm at altitude, i've generally run 97...for a little extra bang. I don't know what it is with the additives over here, but you generally notice quite a bit of a performance difference between 93 and 97...i've noticed on my wife's 125, it barely crawls up hills on 93. But runs great on 97. So just stuck with it for all the bikes i've had.

Keep in mind that it is likely that the fuel ratings are calculated differently depending on your location's accepted rating formula.  I don't know for certainty, but I'm willing to bet his 97 is likely different than what the 97 rating would be in the states.

Sa uses ron (research octane number)...I think the u.s. Uses pon (pump octane number). It's like an average of ron and another system. Our rating is normally 4 or 5 digits higher. Just in case anyone is thinking of doing some touring in sa. But what seems to make a difference over here are more the premium additives to the fuel...coastal regions only offer 93...at altitude, you have the option of 97 or 93 at a difference of about one rand between the two. But as I said, there is a distinct performance difference between the two...97 definitely gives more bang and an increase in economy (I don't know why...probably additives, but it just does. At least it seems to...but it might all be in my head), but costs a little more. But then 93 also costs more inland than it does at the coast. Go figure.

Ya here in the states they use ROM and MON averaged (R+M/2) sometimes known as POM. A RON rating of 97 would be similar to a POM rating of 92 (Yay for the internet!) which still would be high for a GS here in the US but there are other factors such as the additives that may make a difference too. As far as altitude from what I understand the higher the altitude the thinner the air so your effective compression ratio actually goes down and therefore you should actually be able to use a lower octane rating, not sure why they would offer a higher octane rating at higher altitudes. Personally I would look for a GS manual for your particular local to make sure you are not wasting money or just go by the seat of your pants method  :)

Oh ya I am a know-it-a-bit ass...  ;)

Ok...so replaced all the fuel lines...seemed to be the problem. Also opened up an cleaned out the tap. Just a quicky....does the gs come standard with an in-line fuel filter? Found a can one on mine...wasn't clogged up, but bypassed it anyway. Petrol in sa isn't that dirty anyway. Should it be there and should I put it back?

Ok...so done some searching around...from what I can tell, an in-line fuel filter is not standard on the gs...can't find any specific info on south africa...but since she I now running great without any problems, i'd say it was a starvation problem...might have been the lines, might have been the fuel filter. Either way, she's rumbling like a giant yellow drug fuelled highly agitated kitten again and p*ssing off my neighbours. Thanks for the help guys. Now to start planning some mods.

Thinking of starting with a can replacement...starting to go deaf. And some new front forks, but i'll save the mods for another thread. Eventually want to get her looking like the blue and gold street fighter (photohacked pic with the ducati monster backend that i've seen bouncing round in a few threads ... Hey, maybe not an original idea, but I bet it'll be the only one in south africa! And it looks GOOOD).
