Oil bypass question (NOT oil regulator)

Hi Folks,

the different manuals show (in the oil flow diagrams) that there is an oil bypass that flows past (parallel to) the filter, obviously if the filter gets too blocked it helps to keep the oil flowing (I am not referring to the regulator that drops the oil pressure back into the sump if it gets too high).

My question is how does this work? Looking at the filter and the flow diagrams, the oil enters around the outside of the filter and moves to the inside and then leaves. If the filter gets blocked the pressure should force the filter tighter onto the exit port no?

I am struggling to understand how this will work.

Bypass is part of oil filter located in center of outer face of filter, pressure pushes it open for flow straight thru when the filter is plugged.
