Hi,
I have the opportunity to buy some near new SV650 parts and was wondering what parts are interchangable between it and my GS500 besides the chain guard.
Sorry for the newbie question. I know next to nothing about bikes except how to ride. Been riding for 30+ years but ALWAYS use a mechanic for fixing and servicing. :icon_rolleyes:

Mirrors and bars will be interchangable. The rear shock will be. I would not do the forks as the OEM SV forks are not much better than the GS other than the fact they're dual rotor. Just about anything can be made to fit with a bit of modding. It would be better if you told us what parts so we could give you a better answer.

ATM I have a 99 clutch perch that I'm going to be putting in so I can have adjustable levers on my clutch and brake
Some say that he submitted a $20000 expense claim for some gravel

And that if he'd write a letter of condolance he would at least spell your name right.

The forks themselves wouldn't be much better, but the whole front end would be a good upgrade. Better brakes would be the biggest plus, probably a better tire selection for the front(which doesn't help if you're still limited on the rear), and with the forks you could have the SV clipons. Is it a naked SV? the newer ones had really nice looking headlights.

Its a wrecked one so front end F**ked all rear end is good though.

So a front end swap is out lol. How cheap can you get this bike? Would it be worth replacing the front on the SV and then riding that?

No the bikes already broken down and lots of prime parts are gone or broken. It had only done 3000kms and was a 2010 model so I bought the shockie and the chain guard shipped from S.A. to me in QLD for $90.00 which I thought was pretty good as they are really smick condition as opposed to my 1989 model shockie and chain guard. Hope that was cheap enough?

Disclaimer: yeah sorry this is an old thread :-} but it was the first hit in a google search about gs500 with sv650 forks.

There's also the fact that the SV fork tubes have the nifty little adjustable pre-load gizmo on the top that you can use, without having to take the fork tubes apart every time.

Has anyone swapped out the tubes?
I wonder if you could even just swap out the top bits, to get the adjuster, on existing gs500 fork tubes?

Sv tubes are different OD. They will fit a katana fork leg set though ... dunno why, 89-96 kat's are better in every respect than the sv ...

The sv triple set is 30 mm X 30 mm bearing - no way a GS neck will take a 30 X 55 or any available OD with a 30 ...

GS needs 25 top and 30 bottom stem. Nothing else wil lfit.

The adjusters need to drop down with a long D shaped tube and that can change valving in the bottom part ~18" down from the top.
The GS wont fit the kat or SV top cap, the long D shape will be too long, and the GS doesn't have valving in the dampiong rod ...
So you can machine a top cap for the GS legs, put that clicker on top, cut or machine a D shaped rod of the right length, machine a valve system in the GS's damping rod and put it all back together ...

Or say screw it and fit a Katana FE. Twin disk and much stiffer forks.

Cool.

Huh.
the GS and SV fork tubes LOOK so similar, I made a poor assumption. Guess I should have attempted to actually measure diameter.
Thanks Buddha :)
