I thought I'd give this a try because it feels like the brake lever is getting hung up about midway through its travel when I pull on it.  Do you experienced folks with such a task recommend the use of a tool for this or can I just spay cable lube into the cable without it? Thanks.

The brakes are hydraulic.  There is no cable.  Take the lever off of the perch and clean/lube it with some grease and you should be set.

Be aware, this is not very wise advise!

From time to time the master cylinder needs rebuilt - the plunger can get dirty / corroded and begin to feel like it's getting caught up on something. But try taking the lever apart first and cleaning the pivot point like Slack mentioned.

It's opener there in the wide open air...

Just spray a little WD-40 into the brake lever pivot joint and it will be good as new for another couple years.  I've only done it a few times in 14 years and 175k GS500 miles.  No need to take anything apart.
