well, ive been away for awhile, my poor GS has sat neglected for many year now. I now wish to bring her back to life.  2 main things in my cross hairs are carbs and tank. mostly the carbs.  I have a funny feeling they may be very hurt by the 10% ethanol they put in the fuel down here as its been destroying my weedeaters and lawnmower for some time too.   i never did find out, but i think the carbs with TPS on side came out in 97? and on up to current on the 500F?  Other then the TPS is there any diff with carbs from newer years that would keep them from working on older pre TPS engines like my 89?

Buddha is THE carb guy, must have missed this thread I would think. You may have known him as Srinath once upon a time?...

However, I think I can contribute here...
I believe the biggest changes/likely only changes in carbs was in 01+ models when they went from 2 jet (89-00) to 3 jet (01+). Then the TPS wasn't added till '04 models with some other small changes on the carb, and are all the same thereafter.

I remember Srinath, yeah, he is the man of make it work.   ok, ive not messed with the 3 jet carbs yet, i imagine tuneing those to work is just a matter of jetting, but im seeing more with the TPS on them on Ebay. my bike is an 89, so the brainbox/igniter isnt going to use those inputs.  or that 3way valve thingy what ever thats for.  Im wondering if i can just (with correct jets for no airbox and aftermarket exhaust) jack the TPS carbs onto my 89, leaving the TPS pigtail dangling in the breeze and the extra bits and bobs deleted or dead.  I Imagine the jets are what pilot,intermediate, and main? 

my 89 carbs are running 40 pilots and 145 mains and 2 tiny washers under the needle, but i fear when i open them next. the plastic floats,float cages and needle seats are gonna crumble

Yeah I know the newer carbs can fit on the older bikes with little issue, but I'm not sure on all the specifics of it... Just going off my thoughts here, so might need corrections or clarifications...

I do know you can just cap off the pair system stuff and take that valve off of there...
I suspect you would need to remedy the throttle cable difference (older bikes have single throttle cable, newer bikes have two) so you might need to get throttle and cables for newer bike too?
I am also aware there is some concern with the carb boots... Cant remember for sure which way it goes but I 'think' its new carbs fit on new or old boots, but old carbs only fit on old boots.  So you should be okay on that aspect if that is indeed true.

my 89 has push pull throttle cables so no problem there, the carb bodies and boots should be the same all across the board.  now i just need to find a set of carbs someone would be willing to sell cheap.
