Hi.  I've gotten a ton of info from this forum and I appreciate that.  I'm about 99% done with an engine swap and I'm running into issues....

I have an 02 GS500 that had engine issues.  I found an 03 Canadian model and swapped it out.  I've fought through some issue but now I'm only getting spark in one cylinder.  I realized the ignition pickups are different.  The 03 has a 3 pin and the 02 has a 4 pin.  I've realized this has to be the issue however...when I put my 02 pickups in the 03 motor it wouldn't turn over.  I plugged in the 02 pickups and connector and hit the starter button and nothing.

There has to be something else in the wiring keeping it from firing....I plug in the 03 pickup and it turns, 02 pickup and nada.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

...not meaning to butt  in here, I'm a polite enuff guy, but if the starter literally will not spin the engine over with that plugged in, you seriously need to consult a good wiring diagram to discover differences between those models...just sayin'...interlocks?

Please do butt in.

I plug in the "03" pickup into the bike and the starter spins...I only get spark in one plug.  I plug in the 02 pickup and the starter won't spin.  Pics attached. (pic doesn't show but yes I bolted in the center piece...)

Am I missing something?  I found a lot of useful info on here about engine swaps between 89-02 and 04+.  This is an 03 canadian though.

All I know is I have an 01 and had to swap the entire signal generator. I installed an 09 motor into my 01. I can only assume even if you swapped your signal generator, your maybe forgetting about the cdi box or module...?

Do you need an 04+ CDI box?  I only tried swapping the part in the picture.

Two different systems here, the first pictured setup is a standard generic Hall Effect pickup coil design, the other is a more sophisticated crank angle measuring setup.  apples and oranges, as prev. stated by somebody , (sorry, bad with names), you need ALL of either system, not bits o both.

It's alive.  So probably somewhere between the kids screaming and me cussing at the bike over the past 2 days I didn't seat a wiring plug.  I put in the 02 pickup again and it fired right up.  Now it's time to bolt it back together and finally ride again....

:woohoo:
