WTB: Airtech Front Fender (Black)
« on: August 05, 2013, 08:04:31 PM »
Hey guys,

Since my fender broke I figured I might as well upgrade to a airtech fender like I have always wanted to. Black would be the best. If you have one that you want to get rid of let me know what you want for it. Thanks,

Jake

Anyone?

If not, does anyone know the credibility of the Airtech website and how safe it is to order from them? Thanks,

Jake

It's been a few years since I've ordered anything but they're good people..... old school.... but good folks. Be prepared to wait, they don't have these sitting on the shelf, they pull out the molds and make them to order. Also beware that Airtech stuff is really thin and flimsy ....... perfect for a race bike,... but for the street I usually add a layer or 2 of 'glass to their stuff.

Thats definitely some good info. Is it really worth it to add a few extra layers? I'm well aquainted with fiberglass but that doesnt mean its not a pain still haha.

I've ordered a few things from them - they are good people to deal with.

I've never had an issue with their glass being flimsy though, so I can't speak for that. Then again, the seat and quarter fairing I ordered don't take as much punishment as a fender......

You got any pictures of the seat and quarter fairing on your bike? I asked about the carbon fiber fender and the guy said like 450 dollars! Haha

Won't do you much good, since it's not a GS500....... but here's the "condensed" build thread on ADVRider:

The bike is my GR650, the seat is from Airtech along with the 83 Katana quarter fairing. The fiberglass headlight is from RocCityCafe.com

The airtech I got from Adidas on here wasn't very flimsy. Its on the same level of sturdy as my gixxer's front fender. I shoulda taken the airtech off my gs when I sold it dangit. I still have the stock fender in the garage

Oh wow... immaculate. You never see those in stock form, much less a build like that.

Thanks Mauricio. Once I get it done THIS time, I'm never tearing it down to the frame again.

It's great when people ask me what it is and I say "1983 GR650", and the still don't know anything about it.

Did you keep the motor stock?

I wonder how many of the GS I4s performance parts are direct swaps. These could make killer AHRMA racers without breaking the bank.

Very much so. The only thing I changed at all internally was the clutch plates and springs. The motor takes mods to intake and exhaust very well though. The stock airbox is minuscule (it was designed to fit in a VERY small space), and the exhaust is heavy and restrictive.

Not many performance parts swap over I'm afraid - the GR motor is very unique in that aspect. The pistons are shared with one other bike (Buddha knows, but I think it's the FJ1200?), the crank is unique along with the valves. The camshafts are interchangeable with the other GS twins but the GR cams are the "lumpiest". As far as racing goes, the GR650 gets the majority of its added cc's from about 1/2" more stroke than the GS500 / GS450. Longer stroke = lower revving motor.

It's an absolute blast to ride in the turns and doesn't care about going uphill. But actual racing? Nah, it'll self destruct.
