I'm doing a bunch of much needed maintenance on the gs and I noticed a fair amount of rust covering the exhaust piped.  The exhaust header bolts are pretty bad and pitted.  Do any of you do anything like painting or wrapping to prevent exhaust rust?  What do you use?

High temp paint - like 1500 degree paint.
Cool.

Make sure you use a wire brush and possibly acid to get rid of the rust before you paint.
I am into buying bikes that people have given up on and fixing them up!

RIP Patrick Lajko, I miss you man.

Even better, see if any local machine shops will sand-blast it for cheap.  You need to get the rust off before painting, otherwise you are just covering it up and it will continue to eat the metal underneath the rust.

But yeah, coat the whole thing in high temp paint.  I'd recommend something like header paint, but I'm sure caliper paint would work as well.

I got myself a can of VHT Flame Proof ceramic paint from PepBoys for like $10.  One can did several coats, and looks great!  So far it's holding up to rocks and such as well, no signs of wear or fading.

I would replace the exh gaskets and bolts. Use I wire brush or wire wheel on a drill and clean it. As mentioned, I too have used VHT header paint and it works great
