Gas in oil...

I had a float needle that wasn't seating, so I know have a bit of fuel in my crankcase. Not much, the oil is just slightly over full.

My question is with the fuel in the oil, should I allow it to warm up before changing the oil? I would do it cold but I want to be sure to get all the bad oil out.

Is it safer to do it cold or run it just a little to warm it up first? The bike has got less than 8k miles on it, I really don't wanna spin a bearing or anything.

Nah, drain it when it's cold. Make sure you change the oil filter too though, since it contains some oil as well. Personally, I would let it drain for an hour or two with the bike on the centerstand to get as much out as possible though.

Don't ride it, change the oil fast, and you can do it when cold. The gas and oil mix gives it a viscosity equal to soapy water so it'll drain right out. I was chasing issues like that for 2 months and 4 oil changes due to contamination. Turns out my fuel lines were routed to the wrong nipples and bypassed the petcock entirely

Thanks to both of you! I had planned to change the oil filter, and I will not be riding it until the oil is changed and the carb is rebuilt.

I have an EX500 as my primary bike, the GS is just a cool project I picked up in a trade. So no problems letting it sit until i have everything perfect on it.

you CAN pull the plug wires to circulate the oil to get it out. spin it in spurts OR if you have to heat it up, put a space heater near crank case. if not just drain it cold. takes a tad longer but id not run it contaminated. at all, not even briefly.
