Newb here with 1st bike ('02 GS500) 5.8K mi (400 mine).  Should I do the forks with racetech or sonic springs and rear shock with an R6?  Even with my limited experience it seems to wallow and these are cheap mods by any measure...$250...are you kidding?  Seems like a no-brainer..

Any recommendation?  Racetech v. sonic is minimal $ difference?

Replacing the crappy OEM springs is one of the best mods you can do to these bikes.  I went with Sonic springs and love them.

It would help to know how much you weigh with gear on, but sonic springs.com has a spring calculator. .85 springs are a good start, and a kat rear shock. That is an amazing upgrade.
I am into buying bikes that people have given up on and fixing them up!

RIP Patrick Lajko, I miss you man.

Replacing the stock springs with stiffer Sonic springs was hands down the best upgrade I've ever done to the bike.  I'm happy with sonic springs, they work at the advertised rate and they're nearly $50 cheaper than racetech.

Yes go a spring upgrade and sonics are the go. But race techs are also great too
Some say that he submitted a $20000 expense claim for some gravel

And that if he'd write a letter of condolance he would at least spell your name right.

I went with .85 RaceTech springs and an R6 rear shock. I'm about 5'9" and 160 pounds. This setup works extremely well. The Kat rear shock is even stiffer than the R6, but it also lifts the rear end a bit. It all depends on what you want from your bike.
