Seeing the area of the crash, I would say that's a valid analysis!  I've felt the tires slip on just a small, straight expansion joint, and its scary to say the least... couldn't imagine a turn on an angled joint across the pavement that could put both tires in the slip zone at the same time... probably while leaning... bad scenario, especially if you aren't aware of it coming.    I'm just imagining, tires slip, front then rear, rider grabs brakes, tires regain traction at a lower speed than entry... highside, and over the rail.  Probably other likely scenarios with an expansion joint like that...

I hope they investigate further, and if this is the cause, that they aim to do something about it.

Plus you gotta remember seattle, it rains all the time. That steel lip will be slippery as a banana peel cos oil+dirt+water ... hey that's what I use to lubricate the motor normally on the kawi ... or atleast it looks like than when I drain it.

A witness who was below the viaduct at the time of the crash said the rider's helmet flew off when he went off the road.

Also wear your gear, and properly too! :O

Youd be surprised how many times ive seen one wearing helmet, but straps hanging. and noticeable helmet movt. ( with face remaining motionless)

Why aren't there barrier walls there? That seems like absolutely piss-poor traffic safety work.

Seems it would be nicer if the expansion joints were slotted. ( teeth meshing) or tilt up the teeth a couple degrees, so slippage would be minimal.

That whole Alaska Way Viaduct is outdated and is coming down, the largest tunnel boring machine in the world is at this very moment, digging it's replacement

i guess they get an undermining feeling at times. im sure there would have to be  outside stops at placesid not be able to go that far underground. theres a 30 some odd mile norwegian tunnel. that has rest stops here and there.
