I'm getting a new sprocket and the gs wiki calls for a JT 516 and the width is 8.8 The sprocket I'm looking at is a JT 516 but it has a 8.5 width. Will the skinnier sprocket work? will I need to add a washer or something?

SHOULD work. a washer if you can find one to fit would be nice though

There are 2 thicknesses of sprocket hubs for the GS500.
Old ones are thinner. Newer ones have a thicker hub.
You should use the correct one for whatever year your bike is.
JT has both thicknesses.

The JTF516.16 fits all 94-09 GS500/E/F models.  Use it and don't worry about it, the difference is insignificant.  Current width over the hub of that part is 8.5mm per JT site dimensions.  The JTF565.16 without a hub is used on 89-93 GS500 models, that one is narrower, fits the 1/4" space between 520 chain link side plates.  Wiki is outdated on that 8.8mm dim, should be 8.5mm.

That's really what I meant to say......
There are 2 types - with and without hub.

OP was questioning the 2 different dimensions shown for the JTF516 sprocket with a hub.
