This has happened a couple times. Ill be riding without any issue. Through the city so im stopping at traffic lights and all that jazz without a hiccup. However this evening when I stopped at the chinese food place I shut off the bike went inside waited for ten minutes to get my food. Went outside to leave and bike wouldn't start. After about ten minutes of sitting there it finally did start. A week ago I went to pets smart. Went inside for all of 5 minutes came out same thing. Waited for about ten minutes and it started up.  I dont know what could cause this or where to start as far as trying to fix it. So any advice or info is appreciated. I did try searching but everything that came up in search was battery related.

"Wouldn't start" isn't descriptive enough for us to be able to help.  Did the motor crank over at all?  If so, how long did you try it for?  Try giving it any throttle while cranking?  Did it fire once or twice, or just nothing?

Sorry. It would turn over. Turning the throttle did nothing at all I did try that. I would try to start it for about 5 seconds then stop for a minute cycle the key off and on try it again with no change. Then I would wait for ten minutes and try to start it and it would crank right up.

Old Mechanic

Next time it does it pull a plug wire and see if there is any spark.

Also wouldn't be a bad idea to check voltage if you got a meter laying around.

Its been know for the coils in the ignition pick-ups to go open circuit when they get hot and return to normal as they cool. Its a possibility in this case but you need to start narrowing things down by checking for a spark on both plugs next time it cuts out.

+1 to sledge. If so, it will get worse, it may also die when running as it does.

Isn't likely two pickup coils would come in and out simultaneously and loss of one cylinder would not kill it while it was running, it's a bit rough and lacking in power but GS will make it home on one cylinder if there are no steep up hills, been there and done that.

Isn't too hard to get it started on one cylinder either so it doesn't seem likely to me it's a pickup coil problem.  If it is ignition problem the odds are 2 to 1 it's the module I think on the GS.  Have had both module and pickup problems on cars decades ago when electric ignitions were new and with the single pickup coil they really do act the same.

Good point Buddha, I've only had the 2 pickup models.  Nice to have a spare.   :icon_lol:

I hate to think one of these days real soon the 2 trigger ones gonna go NLA.
The single one should be adapted to the older wiring and ignition box.

The single and the dual are compatible.
Dual can be plugged into a bike with a single.
Single can be put on a bike with a dual if you add a 2nd pick-up.
The connectors are the same - just 3 wires .vs. 4 wires.
When you can't get a dual, get 2 singles and move a pick-up to make a dual.
When switching a bike from dual to single, just leave it as is. The 2nd pickup won't do anything and won't connect to anything.

The plate for the pickup is usually pre-drilled for two. Same plate used for 1 or 2 pickups. You might have to add the 4th wire for the 2nd one but the connector is a 4 pin connector, just the 4th wire and pin not the the connector for the single pickup versions.

I have never tried it on a suzuki trigger, but a yamaha trigger will not come off the plate except in pieces, its either made around it, or glued or heat stuck or somehitng ... I grafted 2 into 1 by cutting the middle part and welding them together.

OK If I ever get a 2 pickup that is bad I'll try to identify and yank the bad one off ... but then, I can just replace the bad one with a good one and forget about it ...
