Can anyone tell me the "correct" R6 shock for the conversion, and also I would like to update to the oil cooler if anyone has one handy.

Anyone?

In short, you can't put oil cooler on GS models that didn't come with them... in the way you are probably thinking, but here is Oil cooler info:

Thanks Bboy

since I've not ever seen a newer GS up close (in fact my '92 is the only one I can recall ever seeing in person) - is it just the oil filter cover plate that is different to accommodate the oil cooler or are the cases actually different?  If the former, couldn't you just buy a stock cover plate for the newer version and bolt'er on?

The old Yamaha FZ's and FZR's had an adapter that mounted between the case and filter cover and there is where you pulled the oil-lines from.

sorry, total GS virgin... racing it already but no idea what I'm doing... lol

I may have confused you slightly, so I'll fill in the blanks.  The cases are different between the F models and the E models.  The link above is an option a member created to put an aftermarket oil cooler on an E model.  So you can still put one on, its just not as simple as swapping a few parts as most folks think due to the F and E models being so similar in every other way.

Ok got'cha.  Thanks again...

Considering "superbiking" mine over the Winter instead of running in the 500 Production class next year...

These upgrades would make it a much better bike, though it's pretty competitive as it sits.

Maybe need to visit the local salvage yard and look for an F model as a starter?

with the r6 shock i believe some minor modification is required. i do recall someone saying if you mount a katana 600 shock everything fits easy peesy. bolts and everything.

R6 shock is direct swap, the only extra you must do/have is that you need the lower bolt and bolt-sleeve from the R6 shock... fits like it was meant to go in there.  R6 shock has slightly higher spring rate than stock. R6 shock offers preload adjustment, and compression and rebound damping.  You can really fine tune your suspension with the R6 shock.

The kat600 shock is worth a look too for the track.  It has a considerably higher spring rate than the stock, and is therefore very stiff... not ideal for everyday riding, but probably suitable for the track and heavier end of the rider spectrum. Kat600 offers preload adjustment only (IIRC).

Just folow the instructions here and all is well. Sone slide in from the bottom, some need the tank and air box off. Mine was a top loader. I had to order the bolt and sleve, cause the one I bought did not include those.

What year bike is your R6 rear shock of? Silly question but is the spring also grey? that is why I asked if it was RED or YELLOW. Thanks,
