In the process of checking my valve clearances I've noticed the valve cover paint bubbling and flaking in places. My question is how hot does the valve cover get? Will regular silver spray paint hold up or will it be cooked off?

That'll get cooked off. You need a high temp paint

Badot

+1 on the high temp.

I can't imagine normal paint would hold up, the valve cover gets plenty hot, especially after stopping when all that heat from the cylinder head wants to find somewhere to go.

Thanks. Just picked up some hi temp paint at the local mega home store. Never thought they would stock silver, black I expect but not silver, white, and almond too.
