Took my first ride after install of K&N airfilter, VH SS exhaust, adjustment of main jet, and needle.

All I can say is SWWWEEETT. The exhaust is quite at idle and then comes on strong. The extra power is noticable across most of the power band.

Too bad tomorrows weather is full of rain.

Sweet.  now it's time to consider rejetting the bike.

John I actually installed a jet kit before the exhaust--just to help it warm up and get rid of low RPM stumble. For the exhaust I increased the main jet size and moved the needle up.

Your V&H info under modifications is what made me take the plunge.
Thanks for the great info!

Post a pic if you can of that V&H system.  I'm looking into that.  What do you think?

ASLAM.

I have a '99 GS500E with the Vance & Hines Supersport exhaust..  the first owner installed it but apparently didn't re-jet the carbs.  It's tough to start when cold and has a shaky idle.  Runs like snot once I get it above idle, though!  I have a couple questions:

Does the jet kit + Supersport setup have a decent idle?  Does it pull away from idle okay?  I ride downtown every day so have some time spent a lights / etc.  Current idle is super frustrating.

Last question..  was the jet kit difficult to install?  I read over the Dynojet instructions and they seemed pretty straightforward.  I have mechanical experience, which helps, but also has taught me that sometimes things that sound simple in print are hard as hell.  Did you get the install done without too much hair-pulling?

I'll go ahead and buy one of those kits if you liked it..  and I'll be sure to let everyone know how it worked out.  Thanks!!

is the jet kit and rejetting necessary when installing a V&H?
If you think you can, don't. Many things start with "I think I can," and end with "Ow!"

I have some pictures located at http://r_cook.home.mindspring.com/V&H/

You'll have to cut and paste the link into your browswer.

The bike idles fine and pulls nicely from a stop. Warm up time might be a touch longer than before but no where near what it was before I replaced the idle jet and needle (see below).

About 9 months ago a buddy helped me install a Factory Pro jet kit. It went in easily enough and changed out the idle jet and needle. The main jet remained stock. Finding where the needle should go took some time.
Installing this kit made a HUGE difference in warm up time (reduced it considerably) and eliminated the low RPM stumbles I was having a problem with.

For the V&H exhaust plus K&N airfilter I have a larger main jet and the needle has been raised 1 position.

I had a mechanic I trust (Andy at Metric MC in Houston, TX) install the exhaust, airfilter, and modify the carbs. The reason I did that is b/c I am working down at the fabrication yard and only come home once a week for 2 days. So drop off bike and parts. Wait one week....have new toy ready to pick up.

I was surprised at how loud the exhaust sounded on the freeway but my wife (behind me in her Chevy) told me it wasn't that bad. Acceleration is definitely a bit better.

The weather is crap right now so I'll have to wait before I can spend some more time on the bike.

I don't know how the Dynojet kit is different from the Factory Pro kit but I would highly recommend either b/c I think that will take care of your idle issues.

Now if only the rain would stop. :guns:

You dont need a kit. 40 pilots (they dont come in the kit even if you got a kit) and 125 mains will do if you are using the airbox and paper/UNI filter. Lean bikes run hot, and running it lean will sorta hurt the longevity of the motor.
Cool.

Thanks for the advice, Srinath and RC.

Srinath, would you recommend Suzuki parts or aftermarket?  Any adjustments that need made other than just installing the jets?  Thanks again!!

Click on the link below to see what my Factory Pro kit came with.
Srinth is right, you can buy all the pieces separately although I'm not sure about the needles.

I'm looking at the kit now and the old/replaced pilots look to be 17.5.
