Oil level check

To screw or not to screw? That is the question.

On my recently acquired GS 500 (minus handbook) should the oil level be checked with the dipstick screwed in or just resting on the top, as with my Honda? Also I have heard that these bikes use a lot of oil. What kind of oil consumption should I expect, my bike has 48,000 Kilometers (approx 29,000 miles)?

Thanks in advance for any  advice. :cookoo:

Some say that he submitted a $20000 expense claim for some gravel

And that if he'd write a letter of condolance he would at least spell your name right.

Check with engine hot and dip stick sitting on top of threads or with engine cold with it screwed in.  Started that with old oil burning CB750K that was too hot to touch when hot and found it to be the same or close enough to it anyway.  When GS starts to burn oil and it will at high 50-60k or so mileage at high speeds I just throw it on centerstand for the night and top it up cold in the morning before starting out.  GS will run forever if you don't run it out of oil, I'm over 100k miles now on my 02.

That's awesome, Jack.  When searching for something last night, I found the thread from '03ish where you had just bought your '02 with 4,000 miles!  You're an inspiration.
