Shifting into 1st from neutral

I'm still riding in the arctic North of Minnesota and have started experiencing something different.  When I leave for work, the temp outside has been between 25F and 35F.  I always start the bike in neutral and let it warm up for a couple of minutes.  After cutting the choke, the bike idles normally, and when I shift into first, it clunks and lunges forward with the clutch engaged.  This is the only time it does this.  It's just fine for the rest of the trip, shifting just fine.  The same thing happens when I leave work.  Start in neutral, warm up, shift into first and clunk lunge.  It didn't do this when the temps were a bit warmer. 

Normal, or is there something else going on there?

Perfectly normal
If it bothers you adjust the clutch a tad more.

yup its normal. unless said lungeis drastic like 20ft or something. youll be fine. and when its cold, it WILL not be gentle either lol.

Bikes do tend to do that and the GS500 more than the old Hondas I had but riding in temps down to 20F here in NE Ohio I've got in the habit of holding the front brake while putting it in gear after startup, cold or hot.  Been a long time since I've noticed that cold lurch.  You hold yor brake while putting your auto drive car in gear don't you, as a matter of fact interlocks on modern cars make you do it.

Thanks for the info guys.  I figured with the oil so cold, that was causing it.  Makes sense that the clutch discs may stick together.  The lurch is just that.  It's not sending me feet forward, just a little jolt like one of the posters said, as if someone tapped me from behind. 

I will try holding the clutch lever in slightly between rides.  While I'm no longer concerned about the act, it doesn't hurt to try.

I always felt that on mine, if you rolled it forward a bit as you put it in first, it didn't "clunk" as bad.
