On my (new to me) '04 GS500F, the vacuum operated switch is just sort of dangling in the void near the carburetor bowls. I guess the previous owner(s) didn't know what to do with it. The bracket is still on it, but I can't figure out where it is supposed to go.

Anyone know?

I think it just mounts with a tiny screw to that bracket under the carbs. I'm at work right now, but I'll take a peek when I get home.

yep 2 screws hold it to the bottom of the float bowl.  My guess is the PO was working in there and forgot to reattach it; he may have realized it once back on the bike, but didn't want to pull the carbs again to put it together.

Out of interest does anyone know what the vacuum switch does?

I'm kind of upset that I know this, but on Harleys, it's referred to as the VOES (Vacuum Operated Electrical Switch - such a creative name, right?). When it's under so much vacuum, it tells the ignition system to advance to some factory set amount. Apparently it's not really necessary, but it helps to smooth out the low end. Not quite sure if it's the same application on our bikes, but it sounds about right.

I have a friend that rides a Harley. He tells me things about Harleys.

JAS6377,u think your upset.
I have a system on ALL of my bikes called P.O.S.A (Pillion Overload Sensory Alert).........if a grossly weight challenged chick tries to get on the back the bike refuses to start.   ;)

So, your bikes have good taste in women? Lol.

That would be kind of obnoxious. Especially if you load up for a trip with the missus.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

I've read that the vacuum switch on the GS is indeed used for ignition advance, but is more related to meeting exhaust emissions than making teh horsepowerez.  Same goes for the TPS I didn't bother calibrating after rebuilding carbs.  Meh.

Interesting note: the vacuum switch on my bike has the Mitsubishi logo on it.
