Gs500 turn signal and turns signal dash indicator problems

Hey guys, so i've only recently claimed my motorbike license (2 weeks ago) and it's my first ever vehicle license car or otherwise, i chose to go with the illustrious Gs500.

Unfortunately though whilst fitting pairs of aftermarket turn signals something went awry and now i get no function from any of the four indicators or the dash indicator. I've checked the currents for many of the cables as well as the fuse (which caused me to learn that my bike wouldn't start had that been the problem)

In short has anyone experienced this problem before or know of a solution? I've heard it could simply be my Relay which i plan to get checked tomorrow.

That is most likely the issue. There isn't a whole lot to these bikes, so if you turn the key, and everything else lights up then you only have a few options. I guess it COULD be the turn signal switch too, but really it's going to come down to the relay, or a wire going to that relay. Check to be sure you have power on the wires coming into, and out of the thumb switch on the grip. Then do the same on the wires at the relay. That will tell you which end to start with.

You can test the relay yourself in 30 secs without using a meter.

Pull the plug off the relay and short out the cables in the plug with a paperclip or something. Orange which is the switched feed and I think blue. Then flick the indicator switch left and right......if the indicators light up the relay is faulty or the connectors in the plug or on the relay itself are dirty  :thumb:

Did you install LED turn signals? If so, they might have a polarity and you have some reversed. Check the wiring. You can disconnect a turn signal and check it for functionality with a 9v or 12v battery.

If not LED, do they have bulbs in them?

If you reconnect one of your old turn signals, does it work? That will help isolate the problem.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, i went and got a new relay this morning and installed it, the dash light still doesn't show up but the indicators do turn on but stay on, no blinking just a solid light all four at once regardless of which way i turn the switch.

See adidasguys post above. If the signals you installed are LED, your standard system will not work. There are about a thousand posts on this issue here, so use the search function.
In general, if it was was working and you messed with it and now it doesn't, its something you touched.
As adidas said, try the old signals and see if it works.

Thanks guys, i replaced both rear turn signals to the original model and all functions normally now. Front LED indicators function alongside the traditional rear ones fine so i'm going to leave those in do some more research and solve my rear indicator catastrophy.

Thanks for all the help.

Urgh, so everything was going alright then i installed LED's behind the gauges to give them better backlight and then after that only my left side turn signals worked. So it appears i can't touch anything electronic without a disturbance. I installed the stock indicators in the front and it's working again but i really just want to make this bike my own and don't know what i'm doing wrong. Were the turn signals just not compliant with my bike or am i missing some sort of integral step?

Sorry if this is all common knowledge i'm entirely new to both bikes and electrics.

If you put a led in the indicator telltale dash light you still need the diode mod. . Its part of the turn signal system still. . I put led in the gauges, neutral,hi beam and oil pressure spots and left the indicator till I have time to do the diode mod

I only put LED's in the backlighting for the speedo and tacho itself, nothing in lower cluster.

Turn LED: In older bikes you use a bi-polar T-10 size LED if using standard turn signals.
If using LED turn signals, you need the diodes to isolate the left and right side.

Newer bikes (2004+) with the T-5 LEDS must have the diode mod because there is no bi-polar T-5 size LED.

Best for everyone to get a couple 1N4001's at Radio Shack for a quarter and do the mod. Then you can use any LED and don't need to use a bi-polar one. The diode mod also works if  you still put in a standard lamp for the indicator. So the diode mod only can make things better. It will not cause any problems whatever you install.

Adidasguy, i've been roaming the forum and have seen you post several wiring schematics of the diode fix, this all takes place within the gauge cluster, correct?

Problems i'm facing that i'm hoping said fix will correct are, i kid you not all of these have happened to me:
All lights on
one side working one side not functioning (headlamp and tailight dim and brighten when the non working side was on)
no lights functioning nor indicator light functioning.

All in all i just want a full LED overhaul without issues, turn signals, gauge indicators, gauge backlights and tailight.

Does the diode enable all this to happen?

Sorry for my lack of understanding.

You can insert the diodes anywhere along that harness. On one bike there was a nick & break of a wire in the middle of the harness so that's where I did it. It does go easier in the middle. More wire to work with and easier to hide.
Wire is wire - doesn't matter if at the beginning, middle or end.
