Mounting of AUX power

Hey guys,

I'm installing an aux power outlet because.....its winter and I really just need some thing to keep me busy until my parts come in. Right now I'm converting from an F to E so I tapped off the tiny light below the head light to control the aux power relay. I really want to know where the best place is to mount an aux power outlet. I was thinking in the hole below the tank.

Where do you guys mount yours?

I have my my outlet mounted under the tail cowl.  They're not generally weatherproof (even if they claim they are) so the outlet needs to be stowed out of the direct sunlight and rain.

Just a word of caution to you:  Draw your power from the battery.  You said you used the aux power relay but are you getting your juice from the battery or from the harness?  The correct thing is to use power from the harness to trigger a relay specific to your outlet (if you're running a continuous power supply like a USB port).  If you're just running a generic 12v socket you don't need the relay, but don't pull power off your factory harness.  Go straight to the battery.

Makenzie71,

Yeah your right pin 30 is from the battery but the control on the relay is from the factory harness. I really don't know what I'm, going to be connecting most likely nothing most of the time, GPS and phone the rest of the time so low power stuff.

After thinking about it for a day or so I'm even more lost than when I started. I'm not happy mounting it anywhere. So I think this is going to be my best solution or some thing close to it?

I was thinking I could leave a connector under the tank so when I would use a phone charger I would just plug in the 12 that would be in my tank bag and away i go. This seams to be the best option as of right now.

I just connected an aux socket directly to the battery and it hung by the wires down behind the battery for years.  I could just plug the phone charger into the socket and leave the phone under the seat to charge when parked or run the wire out from under the front of the seat and stick the phone in the tank bag while riding.  Came in handy for the small air pump I carried when travelling too.  Never a problem in heavy rains.
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

There's a lot of them on ebay, too, but they're not any cheaper (some are a lot more expensive).

Granted my photos are of an "F", if you can mount an ACC Outlet up around the instrument cluster/bars where it's easy to access you can do just about anything you want with it once it's in place, whatever I want to charge goes in the tankbag and gets charged while riding, that's the beauty of an ACC Outlet up by the bars, removing my seat was a hassle when I had my luggage on.

Here's what I did with my WR, I added a Battery Tender 081-0069-8 Female Cigarette Adaptor up on the bars and also left the the plug in that came with the Battery Tender on the back of the bike, theoretically I can plug a Battery Tender 081-0069-8 Female Cigarette Adaptor into the rear plug and have an outlet/whatever in the back  :dunno_black:
Soldering is easy and wire is cheap, just make sure you put the fuse close to the source of your juice.

Battery Tender Deltran Cigarette Lighter Adapter 081-0069-5 is also in the photo (for charging bike)
