Bike dies when braking again...

Hey all, i took my carbs off my bike to weld a shock point in for my single swinger.

Upon putting the bike back together i get around 1 or 2 miles away and the bike died, i took the plastics + tank off and had a peek, everything was in order lines were correct - Theres nothing connected to the pipe that runs down the right side of the bike - rear brake side. that usually goes into a airbox i think but im using pods.

It then got me home fine, upon going to work this morning it wouldn't start, i bumped it and it ran for around the same milage as yesterday 1 or 2.

Then it died again, this time battery didn't have enough juice to start it, after waiting 5 mins and taking the tank off again to check for kinks in the fuel line from the tank to the petcock - it seemed it would kink if i put it on without pulling the pipe down. I ran the bike on reserve as that pipe wouldn't kink and my bike was bogging abit but got me to work.

I ran the bike back home with the petcock facing downwards - EW model think thats normal running setting. But upon braking it dies, the bike idle at around 1500, i have a straight through pipe and standard jets on the carbs im using i think, until i swap them all back around again.

What could cause this?

When im braking im pulling the clutch in.
My battery might also be abit weak - It always spins the motor when i ned it too unless ive tried a few too many time.

Is your fuel turned on properly under the tank?
Only going a mile or so indicates lack of fuel or your battery is dieing. Have you checked fuel flow and your charging system?

Pods are less restrictive than the stock airbox/filter resulting in a leaner mix if the jets are left the same; same goes for installing a performance exhaust.  The bike may run without a rejet after installing an exhaust or pods; but a rejet is a must when doing both and recommended for any intake/exhaust change.  Heck the GS500 is jetted lean from the factory, so rejetting is also beneficial for a stock intake/exhaust.

I'm not saying that there isn't a battery/charging problem, but that the jetting is also a very probable culprit for your problems.

Ill swap back to the carb set with the bigger jets in, and see if that solves it.

Not sure about the charging system. Ive got a spare battery if mine is knackered but other than testing across the terminals, whats the other check?

checked everything - The carbs strarted backfiring, as in popping when stood with normal idle - So much so that when i came to swap the carbs one had come loose, i think the floats are sticking because if i accelerate fast the bike still runs after letting go.

I swapped to my other carbs with the bigger jets, everything is sorted but still need to inspect the other carbs. There's obviously something wrong with them.

Air leak at the carb boots was the likely issue there... air leak there will cause the rpms to 'hang' after letting off the throttle... unless you meant something else by 'the bike still runs after letting go'  :dunno_black:

So, combine and air leak, with too small of jets with your intake/exhaust setup, and I could imagine a few things weren't going right for you.

If possible, check what jet sizes you are running, as that would also give an indication if you are running lean or rich.

I was running stock jets as i was using my spare carb while my other was being cleaned.

The new carb has i think 145 mains, stock pilots. Runs ok, but need more plugs to test exactly what it's runnning.
