Hi guys I'm from South Africa and have a 1999 gs 500e. Bike was working fine untill a few weeks ago. The bike starts to sputter when i reach 130km/h and then dies. I've seen on here you guys said it could be fuel sarvation could this be my problem aswell?

In top gear only at 130? ... Or in any appropriate gear at 130? ... Or... What about the revs at the point you hit 130? ... Does it do it at same revs but different speeds/gears?

What I'm thinking if it's at that particular SPEED .. But varying gear or rpms .. Then possibly a version of crosswind stumble (search it on this forum  :thumb: ) .... Which is more about your carb breather/hoses than actual fuel flow issues...

At a standstill .. If you carefully wind on the throttle... Does it do anything in the sputtering department? ...

I'm not the expert on this stuff around here.... I'm the expert on 'nonsense'  ... But if you can identify the conditions/situation more clearly of when the bike sputters and dies... Then the tech heads can leap to your assistance!!  :D

If you catch it when it first starts and back off the throttle, will it then sort itself out, and do you have any kind of in line fuel filter? You could also try running it on prime and see if that helps (make sure you turn it off when you are done though). Another possibility is its running rich from tight valves, checking them never does any harm either.

I was back in South Africa in August, and so many more bikes then I remember from before!
You are damn lucky having the summer now!!! it is rainy and cold in Montréal and I have PMS (parked motorcycle syndrome)

Ride it like a 2 stroke:
1: Rev high
2: Add oil
3: Repeat

I like animals ... They're delicious!

That said, more details on when the sputtering occurs and if you have a fuel filter would be appreciated.  I.e. is it strictly at a certain speed regardless of gear/RPM or is it specific RPM in all gears, etc.  This would help narrow down the possible causes.

Sorry was away from home for some time only remembered about this now. The bike was running a bit lean and the imaltion tube or something in that line was clogged. Its fixed now but now a new problem came up when i rev the bike the exhaust pops quite badly once i release the throttle and only seems to get worse when the bike is warmed up. The rev also take a while to drop from 3500rpm. No idea what it is this time and would like some advice please. The bike is stock except for a old cowley which made no difference. Sorry for the bad english I'm Afrikaans

sounds like the idle is running a bit rich; have you tried turning down the idle adjust knob or the mixture screws?

Sounds like its lean.  You need to check that proper fuel amount is getting to the carbs via float height check... Ensure tank fuel valve is fully on.  You also need to ensure there are no air leaks - Most common culprit is the carb boots.

It would be helpful to know what you intake, exhaust, and carb jetting setup is... Is it all stock, or anything aftermarket at all?

It is all stock. I have checked the carb boots and everything is fine it does how ever make a noise kind of sounding like a sucking noise from the fuel cap and revs pick up when its opened while the bike is running.

Clean out the gas tank vent.  That will cause leanness, typically at speed though... some bikes will shut off if the issue is bad enough.  There is a thread that describes the process of cleaning that out, and it has pics!

I fixed the problem. :woohoo: There a pipe connected to the bottom of the tank which previously wasn't connected. I remove the pipe and the sucking from the fuel cap is gone and the popping is gone. someone explained to me that was the facuum pipe and it was blocked causing the problem. It was on some sort of arm on the tank by the petcock. Pipe removed and problem solved. Thanks for all the help and ideas :thumb:. Now it is saving up for a new exhaust. :woohoo:

You need that tube on there. That tube must be clogged. Clean it out or replace it. That is an overflow tube for the gas tank. If you overfill your tank, or you lean the bike over (while riding) with a full tank, gas can and will go out of that. That tube directs fuel overflow away from the hot engine. Without it, you can easily start a fire on your bike.
