When to go synthetic?

Not trying to start a wild brush fire of a flame war or another oil debate thread but................

At what mileage is it generally considered ok to switch to synthetic oil?

I have a recently required 2000 gs and it now has 1050 miles on it.  I am going to do an oil change, since I have no idea what is in it. Previous owner had a dealership service it at about 700 miles or so (who knows how many months ago) and had no idea what oil they put back in.  Once I get an oil and filter change done at least I will have the piece of mind as to what is in the bike and how long it has been there.

I am switching to Rotella T, but not sure if I should go synthetic or dino right now.

Thoughts?

I personally prefer synthetic. Anything over a 1000 miles on a new bike should be fine. As long as the motor is broke in with regular oil first.
