I an toying with the idea of going to a 17 tooth front sprocket. Problem is, it may be hard to find one here in SA. does anyone know if one from a different bike fits? Thanks.

Thanks, seems a yz250 one might work

When I was researching for a sprocket conversion for my GS450, I spent a lot of time on JT Sprockets website. It was pretty easy to cross reference dimensions and part numbers.

Does anyone know if fitting a 17T sprocket really makes any noticeable difference.  The torque at the output shaft will be much the same as a 16T sprocket and the effect on RPM and potential top speed is marginal.  5000 revs vs 4700 and 106mph at the same rpm as 100mph with a 16T sprocket.  Small engines like the GS500 get most of the power from RPM not torque so it could have the wrong effect.  I recon that peak power on a GS500 is at about 8500rpm before there is a fall off and that would be at circa 106mph.  So its hard to say either way from a theoretical evaluation so I would also be keen to getting the opinion of those that have done the mod.  Is there some advice available ???

Well I'm not sure what your experience has been but....I felt that I was having to rev the engine to much and slip the clutch to get off the line (just start out from a light).  This is with the standard 16 tooth.  I just got the 15 tooth that I ordered off Ebay ($16.00 delivered).  If it warms up I will install it this weekend.  If this partially solves the problem I may even try a 14 tooth.

I've been running a 15T for 6 months it's great, of note with the 14T you'll most likely need to shorten your chain.

I just put a 14T on, on the weekend had to know 1 link out.
