Greetings all,

I have just secured a deal on a 1989 GS500E-K. Not the best of examples but cheap and having had a previous incarnation of the Bike 3 yrs ago (1996) Looking forward to coming back.

I am very lucky to be able to run an SV1000S as well, but the UK councils desire for salted roads with a cheap substitute with more corrosive properties means the GS will fill in, although i do enjoy the bike in its own right.

I only owned the 1996 bike for 4 months, is there anything i should need to know about with the older example? :dunno:

Thanks in Anticipation...... :thumb:

Warren,

Welcome to GS ownership (again)!  The differences between a '96 and an older example are just details.  I believe the shock linkage is different, as well as the brake calipers.  The newer ones had something done to lessen camshaft end float and noise; otherwise the engines are identical.

You folks across the pond must have a terrible time with acid rain and road salt corrosion.  Do most riders keep a "winter hack" in their paddock?

you guys must have problems with corrosion over there.  Every time I pick up and issue of TWO, the GS is listed in the back with..... dum, dum dum.... ZERO stars because of its tendency to rust...  :dunno:

the bikeography is down for a bit

Well picked it up this evening :) , bit spluterry to begin with, but a new tank of LRP has done the trick and a Heady 90 seen on the Dual carraigeway, Overall condition is not too bad at all, just a few hours of TLC and a headlight fairing to go on as well.

Hi JLKasper, it's not so much acid rain as constant rain, (our acid blows over to the land of crispbread) Salt on the roads, to be fair, works brilliantly but can be a bugger for corrosion, the only way around it is to keep washing her down, and yes, lots of people have "winter hacks" but a lot of them have four wheels.

In Cricket the testicular guard, or Box, was introduced in 1874. The helmet was introduced in 1974. Is there a message??

I wonder if anyone has tried one of those electrical rust preventers or sacrificial anodes on their motorcycle.  Maybe that could fight a bit of the rust!  :dunno:
