Bought the bike off some kids that failed at the attempt of turning this bike into a "street fighter". So I thought I'd give a shot at it and finish it. I've had many bike in the past, especially before this one. Although, I am having some difficulty with the 1995 GS500e. After restoring it, I got to the point of making sure that all of my wires were good. No shorts, but a lot of ****ed up, bs butt-connected wires that looks like a rat tried making its home where the air-box used to be. Anyways, I just want to get it idling at this point. I connected the charger to the battery, turned the the bike to the "on" position (lights lit up), then a little 'POP'. Lights went off and now I can't get the bike to even turn on again.

Fuse is good. No shorts. Continuity, 'check'. I've scratching my beard at this thing for hours. I even did my research and tried the troubleshooting tips that I came across. So now I'm here, reaching out, hoping that someone will help me and be the answer to all of my prayers.

Thank You,
Dustin

Ps. Here are some pictures of my build!

Its definitely your fuse lol, you might have checked the spare fuse by mistake. Someone who knows the location of the main fuse on the 89 will chime in soon, I know this much, it is not the fuse that is easy to get too right next to the battery.

Hmm. So it's safe to assume that the spare fuse is located next to the starter-relay? Better yet, attached to it?

jacob92icu

I'm not sure haha. When I had a gs I had the 89, and the main fuse was in the same thing as the spare and it was located right next to the battery. Do you have pictures of the fuse you are looking at?

Hmmmm, I guess that is the main fuse. And you say that is not blown?

Yeah, dude. 'Twas completely fine.

jacob92icu

Hmmmm  :dunno_black:

And absolutely no lights come on? And nothing happens when you turn the key to the on position?

As if there were no battery, my friend. I'm stumped!

dustin

The battery is holding its charge. Started troubleshooting it today and now the fuse keeps blowing. I've replaced 3 times this morning.

I don't have the battery charger connected either.

dustin

Found the short...

Turns on when I turn the key to the 'on' position. But won't turn over.

dustin

Well, now when I turn the key and flick the switch to 'RUN', the fuse blows.

So this happened when I tried to bypass the ignition switch... It was a little chimney...

Haha I learned my lesson a while ago to not by pass fuses cause thats how I ruined my Regulator Rectifier on my GS lol. What piece is that? Looks like some kind of relay fuse. Your on/off switch may be bad. Bust it open and see if a solder came undone or something.

I would also get your battery load tested at a local autoparts store to see if it needs replacing. Also, check the ground cable from the batter and ensure there are solid connections both on the batter and on the bottom right of the motor (which is where all gs ground wires are routed to I believe)

I think it is the Relay Fuse.
I did check all the connections. Maybe not well enough. Probably got a frayed wire somewhere.

I definitely need a new battery. I only have 8.7v coming out of it. Hmm, I think I do recall the ground connecting somewhere near the bottom right of the motor. I just mounted it to the frame.

Thanks man!!

Double check that the makeshift ground point you made is a good clean connection with good clean bare metal.

And i know it seems tedious, but double check and make sure there are no exposed wires in the headlight bucket, and also where your steering stops are on the triple tree. Back when i had a gs, moving the steering back and forth would rub the wire till the copper was exposed and then pop my main fuse.

Will do.

It appears that's my Flasher Relay that burned up.

I almost want to rip out the entire harness again, trace each wire and heat shrink it.

Nothing lost there except for your precious time haha. Wait till adidas chimes in, he might have some other information on what your problem could be.
