Hey all,

I'm in the market for new tires, my current ones only lasted ~2500mi (shinko 740), to be fair to the tires they are only warn in the middle, and I ride the bike like a stole it....kinda did for $1000. Anyways I need a new set soon. What are you guys running what seams to take the most abuse? Money is tight thus why I'm riding a gs500  :D  I mostly commute to and from work, a few week end rides.

Paging GsJack......

I read a review on the GSResources about Avon Roadriders and Shinko tires (can't remember which Shinkos though...) and the author said that the Avon tyres got much more mileage than the Shinkos. And he was sure to point out that he is tough on tires too. I can't remember the specifics, but the Avon's were cheaper in the long run.

Matter of fact, I think GSJack had similar results.

My Michelin Pilot Activs have more than 7k miles of not the lightest riding on them and they're still holding up pretty well. Granted, I'll probably change them before the summer comes around but they've done their job.

Hard to beat the Roadriders for value, I've been getting great mileage from them.  Got about 15k miles from a 140/70 and 18k from a 150/70 oversize rears and even more from fronts.  Keep in mind though I'm not using them like I did back when I was a kid of 70.  :icon_lol:

My tire log:

407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

I bought my bike with a near worn out set of bt45s so i fitted a set of road riders as the bloke at the tyre shop said they last forever and are sticky on all lean angles and good in all weather conditions , i didnt really believe him they were only £125 the set and im a bridgestone guy allwas allways allways ran bridgestones on all my bikes.
Anyway
I thought id try the avons and for this type of bike there great and to top it off the tyre fitter
Was right they are good in all weathers and sticky on all lean angles and they do good millage.

So yea overall there good tyres and defo underpriced

Road Rider, Sport Demon. Bias play is generally sturdier than Radial. Having the correct tire pressure will have the greatest effect on tire life. Suspension also has a big impact; service the bike. The GS500 is pretty gentle on tires.

2500 miles is unbelievably low for a tire; I probably put that many miles on my race tires before I replaced them.

Well the Shinko 740/741 aren't the best of even the Shinko tires, they're made for oem use on Hyosung bikes.  Run hard I wouldn't expect a lot from them.

I put a set of BT45 on my 97 GS to replace the oem Exedra tires that came on it new, got 9500 miles from the rear one.  Three years later I put another BT45 rear on it and having picked up the pace quite a bit it was half worn out at 1600 miles, I removed it at 2300 miles and went to the Z4/Z2 radial combo before the mountain trips.

I kept a couple pics of that BT45 rear.  It wasn't worn thin in the center, still had a nice round shape to it.
