Hey everybody i need a little help. i recently bought a 05 gs500f with 14k miles on it from a guy that though he "blew it up" but the bike still ran...like crap though. so i cleaned the carbs, cleaned all the carbon from the valves and head, and set the clearance. the bike ran pretty good but it had a ticking sound so i triple checked my valves and they were fine. i decided to ride it down the street any way...the ticking turned to knocking and finally the noise stopped...along with my rear wheel. lucky for me it was only a mile back to the house. turns out my connecting rod is seized to my crank. so now i am in need of some direction to go i have $450 total invested in the bike, parts to fix it is about 1300. is it worth fixing or should i try to part it out?

Parts to fix it may be 1300... but you can find a good used motor for half of that at any time - even cheaper if you wait and watch for deals to pop up... but used motors regularly sell for 6-700 all the time.  Several members have found them $200 waiting for one to come up.  General consensus is that its cheaper, easier, and less time consuming to drop in another motor.  :dunno_black:

I don't suggest rebuilding that motor, its to easy for that $1300 to circle the drain on the first start up, also you might be in for more surprises down the road. I often see running bikes show up on CL for $900 - $1500, I'd get a running parts bike and ride the nicer of the two.

Here in the uk you can pick up running engines for £200 . . I think in your money thats around
$300.

No way would i rebuild when engines are cheap and readily available , id strip the nackered engine down and keep everythin thats reusable as spares and bin the rest
