GS500 Cams in GS450

So Big Rich has popped some GS500 cam's in his 450 and from what I can see so far I'm keen to do the same as I need to take the head off to replace the head gasket next service anyway.

The two questions I have are...

1. Has anyone found the duration spec's for the stock 450 cam's? I can't find them in the Clymer, Haynes, or factory manuals to compare with the 500 cam's. We know there's a bit more lift but that's all so far...

2. There seems to be different GS500 cam's from about '89 through to '02 and then '03 onwards... or something like that anyway going by the eBay auctions. So what's the big difference here? I know earlier ones can have cam walk but my 450 doesn't have that... just making sure if I get the later model cam's they'll still slot straight in. If the only difference is the tacho drive for example, then that's fine as I don't use that any more.

I'm not so sure about duration, but I'm pretty sure the only difference between early and late GS cams is the little shims at the end. The newer models don't have them, IIRC, which is why they don't get the walk. On the earlier ones, those shims wear down over time, causing the cams to slide a side to side a bit.

Cool, thanks mate. The 450 ones don't have any shims either, sounding like I should stick with some newer model cams at this stage.

I saw somewhere on Google where someone claimed the stock 450's duration was 280 degrees with a 74 degree overlap but I can't find it now...

Cheers BBoy! Seems like I can get pretty much any 500 camshafts in there and I may or may not end up with cam walk... Sounds like I need to keep an eye out for some cheap 500 camshafts :)
