I would call it a distributor, but I guess that just shows I'm more experienced with cars, not bikes.

Not sure about Suzuki, but most of these are Hall Effect (magnetic) pick up coils. Each time the metal rotor passes one of the probes on the pick up coils it sends a signal to the coils to fire the spark plug. The firing is 180 degrees on this one. The extra length on the rotor is to give a broad time for the spark to complete the fuel burn. The leading edge is set to the timing degrees.

The 2 pickup coils on the 89-02 signal generators are triggered by the single wide lug on the rotor to fire cylinders 180* apart.  The 04-09 rotors have a single wide lug plus 5 smaller lugs sending smaller signals to provide rpm information along with the firing signal to the igniter unit to fire the cylinders 180* apart and also send rpm info to the electric tachometer.

That's about as best this ageing ME can explain it but there are plenty of bright young EE's around here that can probably explain it in detail.  As I recall from Addy's posts on the subject it is necessary to retain the signal generator and rotor that came with the bike to match up with the wiring harness and igniter unit it has when switching engines from one type to the other as in this case.

A distributor actually sends coil voltage to the spark plugs.  In the case of our bikes, the pick-ups send a signal to the ignition control unit.  The control unit causes the individual coil to 'fire' the spark plugs.

use the signal generator that comes with the bike and harness, not the engine.  the igniter is diff between certin years, hopefully the smoke didnt escape from igniter box.
