I bought my first bike EVER a few weeks ago and it was a friends who had done a few mods to it one of them being a carbon yoshi can, his uncle who is impossible to contact installed nearly all of the upgrades, but Ive got a no doubt about it having never been rejetted, and after reading around here all day Im more than worried it could be damaging the bike. I havent changed the air filter and im sure he never did either at 7800mi on an 06. I also am curious about what size jet to go to, I plan to do pods, so I was thinking 20 60 145 as id read it a few times and what about washers I see posts with and without. Its all very confusing, Im completely clueless on carbs.

Blueman

I would say 20/62.5/142.5

The 145 main should be fine though but i personally use the 142.5. Just buy a few different ones and experiment with them to find which ones run the best with your bike. Remember the bike has two carbs so you will need 2 of each jet.

I didnt mention it, but im not going to have an aneurysm if its not the absolute best it could be, I just want to know im not hurting this little engine. I noticed youre running the larger of the  jet scale with a similar set up, any particular reason just trial and error? Also did you use any washers?

The Buddha

To not hurt the thing ... stay away from the K&N.
The paper filter with 132.5/20 works like a charm.

Cool.

Not sure why pods would hurt the engine if rejetted properly? I want to put them in since I may have to rejet anyway, I guess a better base question would be what happens If I jet the bike wrong? Sub optimal performance? For instance If I go only slightly richer or slightly leaner, am I losing a horse or two or am I losing years off the engines life? basically I gotta know if its dangerous to run the bike the way it is now, so I can actually learn to ride. I bought it this way and if I wasnt unsure I wouldnt be wanting to change anything, its a cut and welded back on piece so its not really something I can just undo.

Like I said before Im totally clueless on carbs, the only ones Ive ever worked on there on .15ci 2-stroke nitromethane RC engines and I know lean= catastrophic engine failure... and thats really it.

There is a strong notion out there that K&N's breathe more than they actually filter.  Not sure what that might imply toward pods... I really haven't researched it enough to make my own opinion about it.

These bikes are lean from that factory - add an aftermarket exhaust, its a good idea to rejet.  Once you have rejetted once, its a piece of cake from then on out... and changing filter type is an easy job whether you've done it before or not.
With that in mind, I would rejet just for the aftermarket exhaust that's on there and continue with your stock filter (clean or replace).  Get some miles and experience actually riding the bike, and then come back to the idea of messing with your mixture with bigger jets and another filter type.  There are countless threads out there of people fiddling with jetting on end... I really suggest you have fun riding before you start down that road - the grass on the other side is hardly an hp or two greener = not green enough for the amount of time off the saddle it may create to get there.

Okay, so would I just open it up and switch thre jets suggested above by The Buddha? Is it that simple or do these washers, and mixture/ idle screws come into play, and this is an 06 the mid-main has to be changed too doesnt it?

BockinBboy

The most difficult part is removing the bowl screws. You'll have to replace them once you get them off. Stainless Allen head are the recommended replacement screws. Changing the Mid with just an exhaust is debatable. Washers are added from the top of the carbs and are a good idea to aid in your mixture with transitions. Idle screw adjustment requires popping out a little plug over them - really isn't hard and there are plenty of tricks to help.

I'd suggest doing the entire rejetting process If you are going to do it... To do it once, do it right the first time.
