Choke lever - Does it turn smooth or kinda choppy?

Just got done lubing all the cables -- BIG difference on the throttle!

Lubing the choke lever didn't seem to help, but I suspect it could be because the lever butts up against the clutch perch?

I have same problem with choke and was wondering if it needs lube, or it's sth else.

When I turn the choke up nothing happens until at certain point it picks up and revs to 4500rpm. When I try to back it off sometimes I manage to get it down to about 3500 but then it suddenly loses it and drops all the way down to idle. And the lever doesn't move very smoothly in either direction...

I know what you're talking about regarding the RPMs. Did you rejet your carbs? I noticed that my choke lost some of its variability after I rejetted and I need to shut it off once the RPMs climb to 4k otherwise they'll drop and the engine dies.

I don't have that problem, and I'm rejetted.  You might look into your idle mixture screws.

I know what you mean about the choppy response though.  Small amount of motion can change the Rpms greatly.  I think this is normal.

I think everything is stock, except the mods I list in my signature. Not completely sure though. PO ran the engine without oil and then got it replaced by one from 2009. I think it's stock but haven't opened it up yet to check.

The choppy choke is not a biggie. Knowing that it is the way it is will help me get over with it :)

My choke is choppy like that, if you take it apart you'll see why. It's the switch design itself not the cable. basically its plastic on metal(handlebar). The that little plastic it you push sits diractly against the bars then the outer case of the switch housing squashes it in places.

Take the switch off the bars spray where it goes with some silicone spray, put it back on and see how it goes.

I did open that assembly once to clean the horn switch (it corroded a bit, my GS is an outdoor cat), but didn't pay attention to the choke. Will check it out. I have some teflon spray at home, that should work, too....

Mine does the same thing..I recently replaced the choke cable as my old one was shot. I think for me it is the spring that makes mine a little choppy. Never have had any issues though, well with the chock

There is a tiny piece of plastic that sits on top of that spring.  If you don't have that little piece, the spring digs into the outer circumference of the choke lever, making it feel rough, and won't stay just where you want it.

I figure I must add that my choke is "sudden" as well.  She revs up to 4500 or so fairly quickly, and I try to keep her within the 3k-3.5k range for 30 seconds as the manual says.  After a short while it'll drop down to idle speed very quickly as I'm decreasing choke.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the additional emissions control devices on the newer models?  It'd be interesting to do a start with the extra stuff unplugged and see if it still does that.  It almost feels like a pre-set condition is being noticed and the characteristics altered.

I will update after I'm finished with my valve clearances to see if that makes any difference, but from what I've read here and elsewhere it is normal behavior.
