n00b questions please assist.

I've trolled the boards and finally decided to sign up. I bought a 2005 GS500F with 16200 miles needs some TLC big time I'm hoping someone can help me, i know it needs a battery and a back tire. But there's also another concern the left hand side leaks a little oil the chain hit this clutchpushrod pin and bent it. The owner said its a $12 dollar piece but i have no idea where to find it the other issue is i let my brother ride the bike and at around 70mph the back tire is really bouncy and bike seems like it looses stability, i'll try to upload a video later what could be causing this?

This thread explain my issue with the oil leak anything else i should replace? The tire is bald i know that and the walls are cracked and stressed.
Im debating if its worth spending the money on the bike or ditching it for something better with less issues. How expensive are parts for it in comparison to other bikes?

Honestly man, it sounds like your bike just needs some proper maintenance. Every motorcycle needs tires, and I can almost guarantee a new tire will solve many of your riding issues. As far as parts go - the GS500 has had very few changes since it came out in 1989. So parts are very available, and usually on the cheaper side of the scale.

I was thinking about this combo how about a battery and chain advise?

Many people run the Avon tires on here, I have not so I dont know how they are. But I highly suggest the OEM BT-45 tires they are a good mix between performance and wear. As for your battery if you need to replace it go with a sealed battery, they are less work. Right now I have a Bikemaster truegel battery thats about 2-3 years old and isn't kept on a tender. As for chains go I suggest a DID 520VX2, but depending on how many miles you have and your chain wear you might not need one, I usually wear them down low before I think of replacing them. The GS isn't a power monster and wont break the chain until your over 20K on the chain. I think GS Jack runs his from 14-18K, and only replaces the front sprockets? I think

I've used mostly DID replacement chains but think the Parts Unlimited chain I put on last time is just as good and less costly.

Suggested the BT45, Demons, and Roadriders  were good choices to  Outtatime recently on another forum, glad he used same log on name here so I remembered him.  My tire log for 180k miles of GS500 usage:

407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

Ok picked up some tires and battery as for the chain i'll wait although it has almost 17k on it.

More problems found did a tune up on the bike and it just so happens that the mechanic says i need a rear shock. There's other issues as the front fork seals are blown in order to pass inspection this will need to be fixed.

Where can i find a cheaper shock for the rear because $300 bux is a tad steep I'm seriously regretting my purchase at this point  >:(

Shocks that will work are all over eBay (or post in the proper section here on the forum - probably a couple shocks floating around). And forks seals aren't all that expensive by themselves either..... If you aren't comfortable doing them yourself, at least try and take JUST the forks into a shop. Taking the entire bike in for fork seals would mean the majority of the labor charges would be getting the forks on and off the bike.
