Spray Paint bike

Any1 ever used those rattle paint cans to repaint their bikes with?

I find it hard to believe they are of any quality and would wear off after a few months, what is you experience with them?

Also, what type of paint would be needed to paint engine with, some kind of heat tollerant paint?

I used that for my GS500 race bike that I used to have.  At 50/50 it was OK.  (50ft at 50mph that is.)

You can get good results using spray cans. I did my GS and I think the paint looks better than stock and although probably not as durable, its certainly not bad. I painted mine over two years ago and it still looks fine. If you want it to look good up close, it will take bloody ages to prepare though. If your existing paint is bad and you have plenty of time on your hands, then go for it. Just don't rush the preparation.

I painted mine with rattle cans for AutoZone, except for the tank. But then I was not going to pay premium for a race bike. But it does look good up close.

Yeah, I have been thinking the same thing. Especially since I have painted the wheels silver now.

I read an article recently (Cycle Canada?) where one of the writers added a flame job to his V-Star.  He just sanded the factory paint lightly so the paint would stick and painted the flames on top.  The fender he coated with about 8 coats of clear (in order to get a nice smooth finish over the flame) and the gas tank he got clear coated with Automotive paint at a shop to give it resistance to fuel.

He seemed to be very happy with the result and added that the paint shop guy was impressed with the work too.

I have painted a few bicycles with spray paint and they have held up OK but definitely not as good as factory paint.
