D&D Exhaust - How to make it quieter?

Hello,

I want to make this exhaust a little quieter, because it is honestly pretty darn loud (especially when I am warming her up).
I tried contacting D&D company to identify the model# of the exhaust, but they were unable to do so. So I don't which repack kit to purchase from them.

I was wondering what is the best route to take in order help dampen the loudness of the exhaust?

1) Un-rivet and repack it?
2) Or can I insert a baffle like this into the exhaust from the tip in? And possibly wrap it with some fiberglass exhaust material?

Thanks!

You could trade me my factory exhaust for it ;D

Buy a stock take off ;).  I'm not just saying it to be a smart ass.  In my experience, it will be most effective.

I find it incredible that D&D can't identify their own exhaust...did u send them a pic?
Find other retailers that sell(or did sell) this particular exhaust & ask them about quietening it,someone must know.
My Yoshi with the baffle in was too quiet & with it out was too loud so i had the baffle in & cut it down 3 times(1/2" at a time, test riding between cuts)

What do you mean buy a stock take off? I don't understand Lol.

Yeah, I contacted D&D about, and included pictures and measurements. They could not identify it.

They said the closest thing they had was an exhaust from 2007 for GSXR 600F. I brought the exhaust used from a seller whom said it would fit a GS500F.

I can only predict that the exhaust was manufactured and designed for another bike. So whomever originally first purchased the exhaust shorten it. I don't know what that is now.  :(

Just repack it with some glass fibre matting, same stuff that insulates your loft.
Or get a universal baffle one that isn't traitor through, think there refered to as db killers.
No need to wrap a baffle.

Hello nathaniel2910,

Thanks for your help, but I am not certain on what you mean traitor through?

I've looked around in hopes of finding an baffle that will fit the exhaust, and I came up with this:

Do you mind explaining or showing me what you are referring to?

I 'think' that was some sort of auto-correct error and he actually meant 'straight through', not 'traitor through' lol

But, yes a baffle would be my suggestion as well... Outside of swapping for a different exhaust anyway.  That exhaust looks like its pretty much straight through, so a baffle that would fit inside, mind the opening and length, would probably offer a significant change.

Oh, and a stock take-off here just means a used stock exhaust.

Haha yeah was an auto correct failure sorry guys.
The above baffle is exactly what I was meaning, have one lying around from a old can somewere.
Make sure the outer diamiter of the baffle is pretty damn close to the internal diamiter of the can, you want it to be air tight so all the gasses pass through the baffle :)

Hey nathaniel2910 and everyone else :)

Thank you for everything help so far! It is much appreciated!

Just to follow up with a update.

I purchased the above shown baffle, and it just arrived earlier today.

I turned on the bike and I stuck in the baffle with a pair of long pliers to see how much sound would be damped before I screw it on.

Turns out it doesn't dampen the sound much. I think I may need to order some exhaust/muffler fiberglass wraps.

Wrap around the baffle and try again to see if there is a significantly improvement in damped the sound.

Was it a 2" wide one since your exhaust is 2"?
If not then the blow by from the baffle would make it rather pointless.
Also instead of wrapping the baffle consider repacking the can itself.
If it's a few years old the material will likely have degraded.

Yeah, the baffle is 2" and I think the exhaust can tip is slightly bigger than 2". So it is not really a snug fit.

I am going to try to locate a repacking kit and give that a go. Keep encountering road blocks here! :(

I.e.: go back to stock (stock exhaust that someone has taken off)

Pokey had a D&D when I got him. I was pleased to get a stock can put on. For what the DD does, you might as well run can-less....to my ears, anyway.

iceman86

Update: I repacked the exhaust and it didn't really dampen the sound. So I am just going to stick with it for now, and maybe swap for a Yoshimura TRS later down the road.

Anyone have a Yoshimura TRS exhaust? I would like to ask if you comment on how loud the exhaust is when warming up with choke?

Yeah, I may just switch out the D&D later on. I didn't expect the exhaust to do so monstrous loud when warming up (not good in the morning for neighbors lol).

Exactly.

I like to go out on pretty late night rides sometimes. I always feel guilty about that one 10K wake-up rev. At some point I may just break down and re-jet.

I have a D&D can that came off of a '91 ZX7.  It is a little longer than your can but I was able to drill out all of the rivets and repack the exhaust.  I went to the local dealer and got some Fly exhaust repacking material that came in a mat form.  I decided that wasn't enough so I took some fiberglass insulation and wrapped it around the Fly mat and wrapped it in masking tape.  That helped the sound of the can tremendously and I used as much as I could fit in the can. I don't mind how it sounds now but I also don't have close neighbors.  I do work on the bike late at night in my garage without any complaints.

Hope this helps.
