Need some help on a 93 500E that is turning into a basket case.

So a few weeks ago I was having trouble with my 93 GS500E. The long and short of it was that it stalled and the problem turned out to be a faulty fuel valve. One new fuel valve and new gas lines later, I start riding it to work everyday. I ride 60 miles one way and it did great after the fuel valve was replaced rode it everywhere.

Yesterday I get to work and stop at the gas station only to look down and see that it is pissing oil everywhere. I shut it off and it stops bleeding. Being that my second vehicle isn't a truck I immediately freak out, bought 7 quarts of oil and rode the last 4 minutes to work. I get off work and begin the scariest ride home ever and stop every 10 miles to top off the oil. I got home and initially thought it was the shifter rod but after setting the bike in neutral and starting it with the side cover off I found that it was coming from the yellow circled area.

I'm pretty sure the clutch push rod isn't supposed to be bent but I can't remember if it was or not when I had the cover off the last time. When I was riding I think that because of how much slack is in the chain, when I let off the gas and then gunned it, the chain shot forward and bent it. So now the pushrod comes right out with zero effort and oil flows like a river if the bike is on. I've heard of chain slack doing this but I'm not a mechanic.

Now with every minute I spend on this bike it becomes more and more apparent that this bike has seen some shaZam!. Namely the deep gouges all along the left side, slightly bent handlebar and various other giveaways that it didn't "just fall over hard." If anyone is familiar with this year bike could you tell me what is missing or different aesthetic wise? The parts list for the bike says that it had fairings for that year, a headlight cowl, and a round headlike. I'd like to fix this bike as best as I can and sell it or atleast fix it to the point where it isn't a death trap.

Here's the bikes current configuration.

The right side is the same, no fairings but rubber gromets to indicate they were probably there at one time. I really appreciate any insight.

Hi, i do not know that model bike but if you go onto a parts site like Ron ayers you can check the microfiche too see the different parts that were stock. I doubt that there were fairings in 93 unless aftermarket buy the headlight is always round.

I feel for you though it's hard to learn all the violations done by PO(S).the plastic fairing around the seat area is missing, also seems there is no tail light?

Re the leak, the rod should definitely not be bent, only the chain could do that as it is covered by the sprocket cover but I can't imagine the chain could do it while remaining attached to the sprockets, maybe the chain broke before..

I would replace the rod, or try to bend it straight) as well as the pushrod  oil seal , very easy to replace by removing the plate holding it captive.

Well as far as straying from stock condition: aftermarket bars, replaced grips, aftermarket mirrors, no bar ends, square headlight instead of round, flush rear signals instead of stalks, no passenger pegs, bunch of stuff painted flat black including engine case/frame/rearsets, no reflectors anywhere, replaced fuel cap, broken levers, missing horn?, no tail plastics, no tail light?, chain is very loose, aftermarket front rotor... probably more I missed, and probably more differences 'under the hood'

It is not likely there were front fairings, headlight cowl, or belly pan on this bike originally if it were from the U.S., but there were front fairings, headlight cowl, and belly pan available that fit this year.

Yeah, the pushrod is not bent like that.  As bmf mentioned, replace the rod and the oil seal - its a mostly straightforward replacement.

Thanks, im just going to get a pushrod from a parts shop. Would it be recommended to change the chain or just tighten it to spec? The chain is still good, the sprockets are still good as well. The tail light is the license plate cover which is an LED, when you say tail plastics are you referring to the covers that run right under the seat? The wiring harness is almost completely exposed which worries me a little.

Is there anything else i shoukd check while i tear the bike apart?

That worthless part is the clutch push rod. That design on the GS permits me to drag the designer of this bike into the street and beat him. Yes I know he probably designed it in 1965 and has been dead 20 years, but beating is well deserved.
It has seals in the thing - find and replace them. Your push rod bent cos ... well maybe it by chain, or whatever ... replace it too. A steel rod of the right diameter works.
Cool.
