K&N Pods?

I don't see any sort of serial number on the filtera themselves. but they look like pods. and according to the PO, they're K&N pods. the priblem I'm having is that they don't seem to fit too well. I had a hard enough time getting them on the carbs when it was off the bike. I'm having an even tougher time with one now that the carbs back on the bike. it looks like maybe the PO chopped off a bit from the bottom, attempting to make it fit better, but that's made it worse if you ask me. the bike has been rejetted. stage 3 dynojet kit according to PO. so then could I just swap them out for a K&N lunchbox instead? sorry for the wall of text. thanks in advance for the help.

TL;DR: K&N pods don't fit so well. want to swap for lunchbox, bike has been rejetted. will it need another rejet?

joweaver88

Swap it for a lunchbox is my opinion. They shouldn't be tight like that, they may be for different bikes. The lunchbox fits snug but not crazy tight and looks like it would provide about the same amount of filter surface area. And I like the idea of it being a self contained thing. Anyway just my 2 cents

crispy_22

yea, I would really like to swap for the lunchbox. According to the dynojet site the Stage 3 is "Intended for motorcycles with stock or mildly tuned engines using a well designed aftermarket pipe and individual air filters." which is whats tripping me up.

same surface area, that would lead me to believe that the jetting would probably be the same, if not slightly different? or is my logic mistaken here? (sorry, new to bikes and carbs)

They're not tight per se, its more like trouble with clearance I guess you could say.

So mine seem to have the rubber part cut down quite a bit, which is making putting and keeping them on quite troublesome. I'll post a picture once I get home from work.

Dont believe that DJ garbage.
Lunch box or those pods - you need 40/150 1 washer 3 turns.
A kit with those + bolts for you float bowls are $25 shipped in US if you want em from me.
Slam dunk jetting - you ahve a slip on pipe right - then yea.
Cool.

Yea Buddha is right, it is better to rejet with OEM mikuni parts... the jets are cheap, dynojet kit is expensive and apparently not very good. Its easy peasy to do it using the OEM jets and needles + washers. And yea when comparing two intakes with the same filter material, the one with the larger surface area will have easier air flow. But from all the information I see the KN pods should have basically the same surface area as the KN lunchbox, therefore the same air flow (so same jetting, etc... treat them as the same). Also the lunchbox fits perfectly, no clearance issues at all... make it easy on yourself and get a lunchbox filter.

yea. that sounds good. I actually just stumbled on the table with the different jetting options. I have a yoshi black can, was told its a full system, not too familiar with the stock exgaust so I can't say for sure.

I'll PM you with the pertinent info.

yea. o'reilley would be my only shot at getting it in stores. I have to call and see if they have any in stock. but I don't mind eaiting. a friend of mine gives me her employee discount at autozone. so I'll probably just do that. unless of course I find it somewhere else perhaps. not sure where else you'd find k&n filters. maybe offroad warehouse...

so one other question, since it has a DJ Kit, will I need to get a hold of a pair of stock needles? or could i just adjust the circlip on the DJ one?

You cant clip your way out of the thing from stock to K&N and pipe.
However if your bike ran 1/2 way decent, you can adjust it and not change the setup drastically and be fine.
150 mains will not work if you have DJ needles. Something around mikuni large slotted round - 135 is mains for DJ needle and K&N and pipe.
40 pilots no matter what ... that part is same as if you had a stock carb.
I'll read your post again and post more relevant info.

If your bike ran good with them weird filters, K&N ru2970 lunch box will not change that.
Make a few test rides and post back.

more likely than not, the filters were just pods with the bottom chopped down a bit.

I'll post pictures of em and report back once I get the new jets and everything dialed in.

Yes I believe you should... better safe than sorry. Better to swap them out now while you have everything broken down into its components. Go on bikebandit and check the parts fiche for the carbs... be careful though there is a mistake on the parts fiche (I ran into this when ordering my stock needles a couple months back). You will see that on the fiche image the needle is labeled #18 and the needle jet is labeled #20. But down on the product page you will notice that number #18 is $30 a pop... thats for the needle jet not the needle. For some stupid reason they transposed the numbers and wont change them even though I called twice to tell them about their mistake. So it is part number #18 on the fiche image, but you need to order part #20 on the list ($12). Of course you will need two of them.

Too bad the picture of the needle on the sticky doesnt show the full thing, so I could compare it to mine, I've heard the DJ needle has a more drastic taper.

I dont mind taking the carbs off and then throwing them back on, its not too big a deal. Although in theory couldnt you access that without removing the carbs, just removing the tank?

but I'll add that to my 'to-buy list' which quickly seems to be getting longer and longer
