Delkevic Exhaust Choices

Hey everyone, so I have decided to keep my bike since I started college this year and don't want to upgrade right now. But for now I was thinking of getting and new exhaust the day I bought it. I did an exhaust mod last year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7OH2Rjde-g but I'm not satisfied with that anymore.
I was looking at Delkevic slipons, due to their price and wide variety of sizes and materials. I narrowed down to two systems 14" Carbon Slipon http://www.ebay.com/itm/14-Stubby-Carbon-Muffler-Exhaust-Silencer-Slip-on-GS500-GS500E-GS500F-1989-2009-/171092239744?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27d5e46580&vxp=mtr and the 14" SS Slipon http://www.ebay.com/itm/14-Stubby-Stainless-Muffler-Exhaust-Silencer-Slip-on-GS500-GS500E-GS500F-89-09-/190879121714?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c71484132&vxp=mtr.

Main question are:
-Has anyone had experience with Delkevic Carbon systems and the quality?
-Delkevic quality and sound overall?
-Any other systems to look at?

I have a K&N lunchbox and bike torn apart ready for installation so any help would be great.

Thanks
Zach

The carbon slip on is easy to keep clean, but I'm not sure about the note. It sounds really nice, but there's a certain high pitched tone to it which I think might be caused by the carbon. I made a couple of videos yesterday

If anyone can add to this if they have heard a comparison of both the CF and SS model, it would be appreciated.

Other than that, the chrome is really good. The front 2/3 of my pipes have yellowed and blued, but the chrome is still intact. I scraped the bottom of my pipes and didn't really make much of a mark.

I think it's also just a little bit more money to get the whole setup, chrome pipes and all. The price of the slip-on alone seems really high when compared to the entire system.

I agree but I read somewhere the quality of the headers to oem are significantly better on the OEM, for having a double wall construction versus a single compared to the delkevic. I was going to wrap my exhaust anyways so aesthetically chrome headers are not that big of a deal. I would like the carbon look so it can keep that dark color look.

The Buddha

OEM heaers are not double wall (atleast not on the 89-00) post 01 the mid pipes are double wall, but not the headers themselves.

Oh okay. Well if i cant afford the full system i would. But i cant imagine any performance gains. Plus i will be wrapping the headers

I've got the full Delkevic system on mine from the headers back to a SS70 stainless muffler.

Fit and function are fine. Sound is loud, even with the baffle in, but the SS70 is one of the shortest ones you can get. The longer ones should sound a lot more mellow and possibly be quieter.

The header pipes have a nice patina to them due to heat.

The Buddha

Anyime you heat stainless steel to past say 450 or so, it will no longer be "stain" less. Pretty soon it will rust.
SS is still steel, dipped in nitric acid that makes a protective coating. It will repair itself when its scratched. That makes it better than paint for scratch prone locations, but not for heat. Paint will stand more heat (but fail when its chipped)

Cool.

Buddha! If you're going to educate the folk get your facts right...
Stainless steel isn't just steel dipped in nitric acid... :-X

It's an iron alloy containing chromium (min10,5%) and other elements depending on application.

Nitric acid is used in the pickeling phase where surface oxidation (mill scale) is removed from the metal.

I figured my best option would be to get a slipon, since it will be cheaper and why pay extra to hide the headers, that I will be wrapping anyways. I like the 14" pipe since it has the OEM shape just a little shorter which i assume will muffle less sound but not screaming.

My other option is if i can buy a used muffler off craigslist and make a custom mid pipe? I have a few yoshi carbon cans i can get for $150-200 used but its the fact if I can make a custom mid pipe for less to make it cheaper then just buying a new slipon kit.

i have the 14inch carbon slip on.

it goes on easy enough! (as long as you have the right power tools) it sounds deeper, for sure- but you're not going to get it to sound like a harley.

MNgs500

No need for harley sound i can ride my Dads sportster 1200 for that;) anything will be better then the stock

AnonRider

i actually made a video

i do a three way comparison at the end where it plays the original note, with the slip on on with baffle in and with baffle out.

MNgs500

Yea, I'm defiantly ordering it tonight O0

AnonRider

do it duder! just remember though it won't match the existing exhaust in color if you've got a hint of OCD like i do.

MNgs500

Yea I was thinking about that, but I will buy some exhaust wrap to cover it. Or repaint black. Just placed the order too almost tempted on the stainless steel for $50 cheaper but i figured i probably would have regretted not getting the carbon since my intentions are to add darker colors on the bike. Thanks for the video, I will also be adding pics once I install it.
