Hey all. I have a stock 2007 gs500f that I picked up this year. I am considering an exhaust, lunchbox filter and rejet to give it a little more throttle response and get rid of the stock exhaust (I just want something louder).

1) Apparently a lot of the aftermarket exhaust companies quit making slip-ons (I don't want a full system). Any experience with the ebay mufflers as far as fit and sound goes?

2) If I tear everything apart, replace the bowl screws with allen heads and rejet, can I rejet in the future while leaving the carbs on the bike (just take off the bowls, switch jets, put bowls back on)?

3) The wiki recommends 20/65/142.5 with just a lunchbox, and 20/65/145 with a lunchbox/exhaust. Can I get away with the small difference in main jet size either way? Or will it make a big difference as far as the bike running right? Would like to rejet once and be done with it but may not put an exhaust on for a while depending on what I can find available.

Thanks in advance. This is a great site with all sorts of information on it.

Dont do lunch box without atleast a slip on. Its hard to get it right rejetting.
Dont do K&N anything if you dont have atleast 30k on the bike, it causes a lot of engine wear.
I'd stay stock filter and do a slip on - and you can get a can off anything and adapt it to fit. Not too hard at all.
Cool.

There's almost 10k on the bike. I'll leave it as is then and just add an exhaust and rejet. Not really looking for performance..just wanted to get it to run richer than stock and sound a little louder.

When you say you can make any can fit..you're referring to one off of another bike or just any can in general? Would a stock muffler off of a ss or something be louder? Any idea ok the quality of the cheap ebay mufflers? Is there a certain size I should look for?

You have to measure the diameter of the exhaust pipe on which you'll put the new can, so that when you go buy it the part of the can that connects to the pipe on your bike is slightly bigger/smaller in diameter so it fits well over/inside the exhaust pipe. If there's a big difference in diameter between the two you can still make it work by welding it or improvising something but it's more of a hustle, better find one that fits well from the get go.

Then you have to saw off the current can as it's welded to the pipe and slip on the new one. Try and get one about the same length or shorter so that you can still use the nut on the right passenger peg to keep it in place with a tie, usually provided with a new can.
