Hi, im at the stage in my gs rebuild that I will be putting the motor back in this weekend. are there any special techniques to getting it back in without too many scratches  :dunno_black:

Probably too late, but here goes:

What are you worried about scratching up? The frame or the engine? If it's the frame, you can either use an old garden hose or pipe insulation. The garden hose will need cut to length and then split to wrap around the frame but allows more clearance for reinstalling the engine. Foam pipe insulation is easier to work with, but will generally be in the way as you wiggle the motor in.

If you're worried about the engine paint getting scratched, try putting duct tape on any spot that you might think will get scratched. The areas around the motor mounts however ....will get scratched a little regardless. Luckily, they aren't easy to see and won't rust (at least the engine won't since it's aluminum) .

Cheers for the tips Big Rich, Its physically getting the motor back into place that's the main problem  :dunno_black: tried a few attempts but it seems to have grown a size bigger  :) I have the frame protected for another attempt tmw.

I just recently re-installed my engine.  I got impatient while waiting for my motorcycle jack to be delivered and I improvised a solution.

I measured the height that I would have to lift the engine by comparing the heights of the mounting holes on the engine to the frame.  Using a tape measure and calculator I came up with a height of 9-point-something inches.

I measured my old college textbooks and find a combination of them that came out to almost the exact height I was looking for and placed them next to the bike.

I lifted the engine into the stack and then scooched the bike over top of the engine.  It was really easy to get them into position with each other.

This worked for me - I had the cylinder head off the engine at that time.  I can't remember if it would have worked with the head installed.  Good luck!

I think Adidasguy has a video on YouTube about the easiest way to get it in the frame, but I've never looked (since I don't have a 500).

On the bikes I work on, I lay the engine on its side and then lay the empty frame on top of it, wiggling it around the engine. But that's when there's no battery, gas tank, wheels, etc to add weight to the frame.

Thanks guys, got a friend to help me today, we jacked the motor up using a trolley jack at the front and a scissor jack at the rear, took a bit of jiggling but we got it in without a single scrape  just the carbs and airbox to fit and then look out for a replacement exhaust system.
