I Need Advise!!!! - Bike won't run after Valve Clearance Adjustment

First off, this forum has been a great help to me with my awesome GS500f.

Although very handy, I'm not what you would call a mechanic. That being said, once I do something once I'm usually good at it after.

So the other day I decided to do a much overdue valve clearance check on my 2006 GS500f. Things seemed to be going well, I got everything apart, checked the clearances, made my calculations and ordered 2 new shims. All 4 were slightly out of spec (too tight). I was able to reuse two old ones in different spots and I had to buy two new ones.

Here are the adjustments I made:

  • Front Left: Was 0.04 - changed it to 0.06
  • Front Right: Was 0.04 - changed it to 0.07
  • Back Left: Was 0.02 - changed it to 0.05
  • Back Right: Was 0.02 - changed it to 0.06

Then I put everything back together (I think).

Then I started my bike up, and it roared to life right away. As usual I had full choke on, as per normal procedures I started to back off the choke after a minute or so.... then it stalled. So I started it again and went through the same thing... then it stalled again.

After the second stall it wouldn't start.

So now I'm stuck.... I don't know what is wrong. I had some confusion about where two hoses were supposed to go. I believe one was supposed to go into the little black plastic cylinder which is mounted above the engine on the frame, and I thought the other one was supposed to go into the left side of the left carb. But that didn't work.

I know I didn't forget to open the screw thing on the bottom of the tank... but my best guess is that I have a fuel starvation issue, caused by something plugged in wrong or some sort of blockage.

I'm assuming that my bike initially started up because the carbs were still full of fuel from before.

So.... after that long explanation I'm looking for suggestions.... what do you think might be wrong.... what should I check first? It's killing me that I can't ride with all this nice late season weather...

Thanks for your help.

I just thought of something I forgot to add to my original post.

When I try and start it up....

  • The battery is fully charged
  • It continues to attempt to start as long as I hold down the starter
  • Full choke is one
  • Clutch is in and it is out of gear
  • Bike is on centre stand and kill switch is in the correct position
  • Rolling the throttle makes no difference
  • After attempting to start it for a few seconds I can smell gasoline
  • There is no evidence of leaking fuel anywhere

The 2 hoses from the tank petcock go to the frame petcock and one hose from the frame petcock goes to a T feeding the 2 carbs per diagram:

If vacuum hose is disconnected it should still start with frame petcock in PRI position.

I had the same problem http://tinyurl.com/owoq4zq

My problem was that I put some of the air hoses in the wrong place

Do yourself a favor study every diagram and know where every hose goes in by heart and than take her apart again when your ready

Thanks for the answers so far.

When I get home tonight I'll review all the hose diagrams and make sure everything is plugged in properly.

So apparently I'm a noob.... feel free to pile on the insults  :dunno_black:

I spent half an hour tonight tracking each hose, and comparing them to the manual.... Then I decided to check if there was fuel in the hoses between the tank petcock and the frame petcock. And to my surprise there was none... even though I was sure I had turned it back on.

So i checked under the tank and to my surprise the off screw only turns 90 degrees between off and on, but it is able to turn 180 degrees... which I apparently did, so it was set to "full"???? anyways, I rotated it to on and then everything worked!!!

In celebration I gave my girl a nice wash, and a ride around the block.... Now hopefully there won't be any rain tomorrow.
