Told you guys I'd probably be back.. I like the early GS500's. I found an 89 for 200 non-op to put together as a commuter but she needs ALOT of work. She had been sitting in a backyard so I'm gonna be bugging you guys for parts but I see potential. Here's the picture from the craigslist add.. everything has to come apart... Ed

What you can't see is all the rust. I decided to try using "Evap-o-rust" on all the rusty nuts and bolts, it's working really good so far.

Very cool.  I will be interested to watch your project progress.  Good luck and no stripped bolts.

ShowBizWolf

Yes, good luck with the project!  Can't wait to see more.  I used Evap-o-rust a few months ago on my headlight bucket and a few other things and I was pleased with the results

Thanks Guys, putting her in gear and trying to turn the engine over with the wheel it wouldn't move so I pulled the plugs, sprayed some liquid wrench in the cylinders and let it sit over night, tried turning it over again with the wheel still nothing, some more liquid wrench and a little compressed air and I got a little movement. Pulled the carbs and exhaust to take a peak and there was a lot of rust in the LH intake must have gotten some water or moisture in there while sitting, RH looked fine, sprayed some liquid wrench in there, pulled the left engine cover and turned the engine with a wrench and she started moving alright. No bottom end noises so far like my first GS (that one had bent and destroyed a rod by the PO) so the bottom end may be good and maybe some of the top end. Now to pull the head and cylinder off then pull the bottem end out and disassemble it all and have a look inside. If you wonder why I'd buy a bike in this condition it's because I'm an old Yamaha RD guy, most of what we buy starts out looking pretty rough but you can usually get it at a reasonable price. It's just a lot of work but it is nice to ride a bike you know you COMPLETELY went through every nut and bolt on. Ed

Well on my first GS I was just barely able to pull the head and cylinder out before pulling the engine but not enough clearance this time.. it's alright the engine had to come out anyway. the cylinder was rusty on the left and the intake valve on the left was rusty too but the bottom end looks good. I tore the bike down to the frame, I have to repair the steering stop then it's clean clean clean and paint and start reassembling the chassis. The evap-o-rust is working great.

That bike found the right home with you Ed  :kiss3:

Signed up. You do great work, Ed. And I'm sure this won't be any different.
