**Updated read below after reading the OP**

So I picked up a very cheap, "fixer rider" or "parts" 2006 GS500F. Plastics are a bit ruff, but in making my decision on to fix and keep, fix and sell, or part out, I am considering the vin report concerning the not actual milage issue.

Currently the bike has "20, 400" the milage was consistent, but between two registrations in a span of 13months, the bike was sold at 14,522 and 13 months later at 62,011 a 47,xxxx some mile difference in 13 months than 7 months later the next sale it was at 20,220.

the bike is in the shop right now just getting a pressure test and looking into why the fuel was leaking out of carbs, they think float issue...

My thoughts are

a. engine swap i haven't even compared vins....
b.odometer broke
c. someone really put on 47,000+ miles in a year

so question is...what say you GStwins (this is my first post so be kind-isn :embarrassed:):

Is there a malfunction that could cause an odometer to rack up crazy miles?
or do you think it was broke and replaced a couple times?
engine swap?

Ill report back with shop findings today, its a good shop so they are full diagnosing my issue before the start fixing and charging.
Im not super concerned with the "not actual" milage I had a uber tiny budget ad I got this thing cheap enough I can part out and get money back, though that might be more slow and more painful than I like, but if its just a minor carb issue, bike is in good shape otherwise. I was going to convert it to an E so scratchy plastics are no worries.

We'll see who guesses right :) but thank you as well for any other info you have on odometer issues.

and check back for potential sale on 2006 GS500F parts :D

I have lurked the forums for awhile thank you all who contribute and post your wisdom, and experiences....makes you believe for just a second the internets aint to bad a place...

Well a crash and replace of the speedo will easily explain some of these.
You can insert a right angle pick and change the mileage. But someone with 62K is going to wear it as a badge of honor. I've had a 48k miler. And I was happy to show it off.

Honestly, it sounds like an error.  Either whoever wrote it on the title, or whoever logged it from the signed title.  Its relatively common for folks to put down 'tenths' on the odometer even when it says not to include them right there on the mileage line - then its no telling how that is entered into a database.  16,201.1 sounds like a plausible alternative for what may have happened.

Yeah thats what I would think.....I have no clue how it will turn out in shop.
I have the same bike two years newer as a potential buy as well all in working order that just kinda fell in my lap so depending on the diagnosis I may just sell the bike as is and buy the newer one, but if fixes are cheap than i might just keep her have fun and sell in spring at a little bit of a profit to a beginner or part time rider.

thanks for the feedback!

I thought the same thing, of course Im being optimistic lol sounds like a way better story if I decide to sell it off, Im not the dishonest type so Ill give every possible scenario, but I just don't see the 47,000 plus miles being realistic...though it is possible if someone wanted to ride a lot for everything they do....

Just stinks there is no way to correct it so you kinda have that there doing a little damage to the worth....all good though if it'll ride Ill be happy or someone else might be if I fix and sell or just sell as is for a father son project, or mechanics special.....

thanks for your response!

Yeah, I'd go with anything that is a more realistic scenario than actually 47k in one year... My wife commuted 100 miles per week day in a Honda accord (plus we took a road trip or two) and still only put an average of 20k miles a year on it. Now her company vehicle average 36k miles year and she literally drives it for 4-5 hours a day (including commute).

Gstwins member gsJack has put 180k total on two GS500s... that took years - I know at least 10 - break that down per year and that's 18k per year... 47k on a bike in 13months, is over 3600 miles a month - I don't think its plausible by even the hardest iron butt rider, on a GS500. LOL

After 3600 miles a month it will go kaput and sit for 3 LOL.

**UPDATE!***

heard from the shop they said the issue is the charging system but they can't find a fuel leak....previous guy must put petcock on prime and just left it on for awhile....

so basically since we know nothing about the bike it would need a full front to back and new charging system.....

the plastics are scratched but not totally destroyed....so what do you all think I could get for front plastics headlight etc?

trying to decide if the bike is worth totally fixing tuning and riding or if I should just replace charging system and sell as is....

Mechanic does not believe there is anyway this is a 60,000+ mile bike, perhaps milage error at one point that set it all in motion...engine and title numbers match so its all original...

A guage swap in which direction?
I'm sure people can put on those kinda miles but just doesn't seem to be case for this bike

If you crashed and knackered the guages, and bought the next one to turn up on ebay or on here and slapped it on - you never know what you'd have for mileage.
I try to get close on miles, but I also have many many guages I have pulled from dead bikes.
