Hey all!

So I have a 2005 GS 500 that I have been restoring from the previous abusers. So far I have rebuilt the top end to get compression on both cylinders and the other day she was running perfectly. I drove a good 40-60 miles; No issues.

Then, on the way home she started to cut out on me and died.

Now she won't run at all unless the choke is on all the way, and when you give it gas the RPM's soar and then stick at a high output until the choke is taken off, then it dies.

So I went through the list of what I know is working to try and single out what isn't, the list is as follows:

-150 PSI on both cylinders
-Large spark on both cylinders
-Spark plugs on correct cylinders
-Battery fully charged
-Gas in the intakes and actually dripping out of where the K&N Air Filter attaches
-Exhaust correctly mounted

***************************
So with the provided details and how the bike was running well before this random act, I'm thinking its something like bad gas? With the amount of fuel being leaked out due to full choke, the high RPM's and sticking? I am just at a bit of a loss because I can't imagine this actually happening, as it hasn't prior with any vehicle I've owned.

I am going to try fresh gas from the station tonight, and will see if that changes things, but wanted to see if anyone more tenured with the model has any ideas.

Thanks!

Stuck float needle most likely. you had a piece of gunk somewhere that made its way into the carbs. I've also had this issue when leaving a semi bad petcock on reserve.

check the petcock first, if it seems to be fine. then check your fuel filter if you have one on there, if it looks nasty brown then change it. if none of those, go ahead and crack open the carbs and spray some carb cleaner where the float needle goes. inspect the float needle. if its damaged/bent/ the rubber end is shaped funny/spring no longer works then replace it. also sometimes under the float needle are little mesh nets, if your's has it still in there, clean that too. if everything looks fine and is just dirty, clean, don't touch any adjustments and then put back together and try to run it..

if none of that works. then you got a gremlin hiding in there. what ever you do, don't add water.

Also, Only running on full choke might point to a very lean mixture, check for any air leaks on Intake manifold side (wd40 spray method) which would dilute the mixture.

I think intake leaks can also cause a hanging idle but not sure as i've never had either

You think Pyrrhic victory is bad you should try Pyrrhic defeat!

Hey guys! After a bit of testing I ended up plugging the all the vacuums and it started right up. Runs AMAZING! Lots of Torque!

However, now I am having the issue of it topping out at like 45MPH....

I'll be riding along in 5th and the engine is at 6-7K RPMs.

Ideas? My thought is that either its my worst nightmare and the internal gearing is messed up, or it could be something easy and be the sprockets?

Also, to show you what Im working on, here's a video I took yesterday of my buddy riding it.

Thanks again guys!
