I'm thinking about buying a 1998 Yamaha FZR 600. Bike has 5000 miles on it and i can't find any scratches on it. I'm going to offer $3000. Is this a good deal? I will have to put new tires on it. Also, does anyone have any experience with this bike? Any help is appreciated.

You need to talk to JamesG.  He has one.  I have been thinking about doing the same.

According to Motor Cyclist 50 Best used Bikes issue,  a good used 97 model would go for about $3,805.  So I would say $3,000 is a killer deal,  of course all depends on its condition.

I hope this helps.

My cousin has a '92 FZR 600... that bike a hoot and a half to ride. Goes like lightning, little topheavy, but balances out nicely at speed. Dunno if it'd work for shorter people though... or how it rides with all the fairings on it, since his is a visual wreck.

That sounds like a pretty good deal to me! My cousin has 30000+ on his, and as far as I know, has done no internal engine work. Although, once again, it's down for a 'black box' that burned out. I still think he needs to check his voltage regulator.

89? thought the 600 was the FZ and the 750 was the FZR

'89 was the first year of the FZR600 with a 3.5 inch rear rim. The last year of the FZ600 was '87. The FZR750 was a limited production (200 units) race bike for AMA Superbike (the rules required a minimum production run of 200 units).

A '98 with 5000 miles on it has been sitting for a while (5000 miles/6 years=833 miles/year=less than average), so I'd be looking in the gas tank for rust (just in case, and you can use it as a bargaining point), but other than that it does sound like a very good deal! :)
