it is a plank, a plank of topgrade red oak plywood. lmao

No, but I used REALLY good foam.  :icon_twisted: Yoga mat! so far on my tiny 33 miles I've put on it since the engine rebuild. it's been really nice, It actually gets nicer once it's been sitting in the sun, and is warmed up! but while it is fancy cut up yoga mat... I did a bit of research on how to make a perfect seat. basically its setup so the bones in your bottom, are making as little contact as possible. so basically your hip bone, and your tail bone have different layers of foam from the rest. offering maximus support! Also I'm not done with getting the seat level and attached... but I got some dense rubber grommets that will go under the plywood between the frame. for even more "bounce" lol

We will see come the end of the summer, 600 mile trip on this baby! [one way..]

I may re-do the seat.. I dunno yet, its a bit wide upfront for my inseam. :/ its not so bad when you're just sitting on it, but when you're getting on, or touching the pavement, it kinda makes you spread a little.. lol  :icon_rolleyes:

I'm also in the market for some waterproof saddle bags, and I think I might do one of those DIY backpack racks that some of the guys do over on the adventure forum.

Basically a vertical rack on the back, that you just slide the straps of a backpack over and call it good!

oh and a tank bag!

oh and when you chop the front fender. lots of the guys who have. forget to tell you, not to chop too much of the sides off... because when you do, it gets stupid flimsy...

Dropped 11 bucks on some fleabay level tail lights, I couldn't find what I was looking for. hopefully they look decent enough and are bright enough... worse comes to worse, I'll take it apart and stuff some more red LED's in there. lol
-Walker

J_Walker

here's how it sits as of yesterday.

I do have a taillight for it. but my fleabay special really stuck it to me. It has 2 little cracks in the lens, even though it doesn't make a difference from afar, I know they're there. and the freaking LEDs inside are CRAP!!  :nono:

that's what I get for paying 11 bucks.

oh and on top of everything. the F***ing plate the tag mounts too. yeah, the holes... to far inside.

this is a commieforina based company [even though the light was made in china] you would think they could get the holes for mounting your tag to it, correct...

debating if I want to fight for a return and refund...

got the seat latch mech all mocked up today. I just now have to move the latch male piece that's under the seat. I either get to pull the staples and re-drill the holes for the existing bolts I have on there now. or take my chances and use a really large but stout wood screw and just drill it into the plywood...  :dunno_black:

either way, hopefully I can stop using a piece of cord and wood to hold the seat into place tomorrow.

Got the brake light installed and mounted.. actually came out better then I Originally thought. and its pointed at MOST drivers eyes, tested with a few cars..  :thumb:

Here's what it looks like off and on the bike.  8)

and if anyone has ever been reading this an wondering what the hell that long threaded rod is for on the back of the bike... they're for future custom saddle bags. I just have to get a plastic container strong enough and the right size, and sew up some canvas to make some bags.  :thumb:

ordered a battery today that will actually fit the battery box.  :woohoo: 58 dollars for a battery. had to do it over the phone too. she said that they can get it shipped out today and hopefully be here early next week. because a GS battery is a "special" order. GSs aren't common any more?
-Walker

J_Walker

Still no battery.  :dunno_black:  >:( really annoyed with the place I ordered it from, everytime I call them "It should be in today, we will call you." never calls. what in the actual f :police: :police: :police: I could of ordered one online and had it here by now.

Shouldnt be a special battery, I never had a problem getting one at autozone or battery warehouse off the shelf.

As far as the carbs are concerned, if you cant get it idleing right, or it stalls when cold or upon pulling the clutch, check your valve lash. Trust me on that one.

valves are new and in spec whole engine is... the carbs aren't. they need re-doing. but I messed with them a little and got it a lot better. now I get my front end to float at 5k rpm in 2nd. and my leak stopped for now. just need a battery its all tagged up and lit up. I just need mirrors/blinkers/tires. and a carb refresh in the near future.
-Walker

J_Walker

hahaha my leak started today. carb refresh coming sooner then expected. man its weird when the GS runs on 1 cylinder.  so now once again, it sits disassembled waiting for a part. I'm all for amazon drones if it means I can cheaply get small parts to me in 24 hours. I think some websites processing is just straight up slow..

Oh and I bought a helmet today.  :D  ;)

no new pictures.. it looks worse then it did when I last started. currently helping my parents renovate their house, so everything will have to wait until the summer or late spring. but I have more resources to welding equipment so my whole sub frame is getting the chop and rebuilt, also building a cage for engine protection. I'm rebuilding my seat setup too, needs to be more comfy, sourcing the foam is actually the hardest/most expensive part...

I still have plans for wrapping the exhaust down the side of the bike, instead of under it. I have some concerns about possibly over heating the cylinders though. I also think If I go this route, it will be not Y piped to a single outlet, but just having two small mufflers out the back/sides, but this has me wondering about exhaust harmonics, and how it would affect performance of the engine, and whether or not I should somehow X pipe it under the seat somewhere... but still have two pipes.. dunno yet. lots of planning for the whole exhaust thing.

and one last thing I've been thinking about for the past couple of days... and I've measured it out on how I'd do it too and it might just work.. but doing a custom aluminum fuel cell. around 7.4 gallons. if I can get the tune on the bike correctly and hit that 50MPG [not a far fetch want for a stock engine] but even at 42MPG Ill be able to hit my 300 miles on a single tank. of course the tank itself won't be pretty and will be bare minimum. straight flat sides, and then I would create a custom fiberglass mold to represent a gas tank.. something a bit more "retro" like a Norton. an doing a custom tank would allow me to add a real good fuel float, to gauge the fuel level.

besides that I've been watching craiglist like a hawk for a cheap used but in good condition windscreen off a Harley.. I don't wanna drop 140-230 dollars on a new one, just to have to chop it up and drill holes in it an generally waste money because nobody is gonna buy a BIG  Windscreen that fits on a GS500f..

I think I need to stop saying im going for a scrambler look, and come up with my own style/look. Ultra Utilitarian look. ?? UUL? lmao

Cool beans  :thumb:  Yeah name it what you like and build it how you want!! The dual muffler/exhaust is an awesome idea, I like it.

What kind of windscreen/how big are you watching for? My GS came to me with a Hellfire or Spitfire clear windscreen (that I didn't want and gave back to the PO for her new bike) and it fit nice. Maybe you could fine one of those for cheap on CL or even ebay? They might be more numerous/cheaper than an actual Harley one. :dunno_black:

When I did the search some did come up on ebay.. and you know how helpful that website can be, suggesting other listings as well..!! and I saw one that says Hell Cat that looks pretty neat
