This morning I discovered a rather bad knock in my engine only at idle and goes away above 2000 rpm, its an 04 gs500f.

I drained the oil, no signs of metal shavings, and opened up the left engine cover, all seems tight apart from the large gear in the starter clutch, array which wobbles. Could this be the cause of the knock or is it normally slightly loose.

Ill link a video of the noise as soon as youtube uploads it.
Thanks all.

I'm confused by what you mean knock, normally a knock has something to do with the valves.. is the knock up high, or is it down low?

By knock I mean it sounds like a hammer tapping some metal about twice a second at 1200ish rpm

Its coming from the left side I think its down low but I might be mistaken

The large gear has a little lateral free play but shouldn't wobble, it's hub is the inner member of the clutch and runs with a nice fit on a crank journal.  Knock is when the outer part of the clutch assembly which is bolted to the back of the rotor comes loose.  It can be hard to tell at first until it becomes looser even though it knocks and rattles.  I had to go back in a 2nd time after mine was looser to shake it, might need to pull the rotor to be sure.

Ok so the gears fine it doesnt really wobble onnits own but moves with a little force, I couldnt move the part that is known to cause the knock when it was in place and it has only just started to knock, so ill take out the clutch assembly tomorrow.

What kind of tools would be required to take it out.
