What's up guys! I was checking out the mods section on this site and I am curious about the ignition advancer. Site says Vance and hines used to make it but stopped production(pt # V21926). I'd like to know if anyone had one and what your thoughts are? I'm a machinist and think I might make one myself if it's worthwhile. I made this plate since the PO scratched it up and cracked it. Thought it'd be cool to also put a handmade functional part in my bike. What makes the aftermarket one better?

Thanks,

-E

Thanks sledge! I think I may give it a shot.

What type of advancer do you envision??  Mechanical?  (I would assume since machinist work is involved.) Centrifugal is what I need for my breaker point conversion (mentioned elsewhere here).  My connection to the crank could be stronger and my advancer was designed for cam drive which rotates 50% engine speed.  The GS 500 drives by the crank shaft at double that.

Question.....

would you be willing to make more of those plates?? and if so, how much would it cost for one?

Same here, that side plate is beautiful!
Just so happens I need one too, win win! :)
If you are willing to make a few, put me on the list.

Thanks guys! I'll look into the possible cost. I plan to have mine black anodized when some other aluminum parts are sent off at the shop. Then CNC an old school Suzuki (S)  into it. I'll let ya know when I check into it.

Elmojo

That sounds sweet!
Personally, I'll take it plain, anodized, with or without the S, whatever!
As long as it doesn't come with custom gouges like my current cover(s), it'll be a winner in my book.

Ditto on the plate. I'd love one.  :thumb:

Here is a simple DIY method:

http://www.gstwin.com/diy_timing_advance.htm

I did that to my KZ1000, I did the mod to retard it though. In the mid 80's when they took a buttload of lead out of the fuel my KZ pinged and rattled when opened up on the drool that was labeled Premium.

That would be ok if I was the one who gouged them!
I've never dropped a bike lightly enough to scrape up the covers but not much else in the 15 or so yrs I've been riding.
If I drop one, it's at speed, and engine covers are the least of my worries.  :police: :icon_eek:

Ok, WHY do the quotes not work right on this forum?!
I have to go back and edit each post to fix the code. It's not even using the right tags!
screw it, this time it stays.

The ignition cover and fork brace are kind of popular DIY projects around here. Always good to have another option when you need one ;-) .

Elmojo

The ignition cover is a DIY option?!
Do tell... (links please!)

I'm not sure he intended to include the cover as DIY.I too am interested?

On this subject,i just thought of something- why cant we make a lower profile ,more modern looking one in high temp thermoplastic?

mennobike

I'll have no idea what piece you're referring to unless you include one of the following: Doobly doo, thing-a-ma-jigger, or dibbledy dop.
