Problem starting - not the relay

I've been having an issue where the bike does not start consistently. Sometimes, no problems, other times, no start. After some research, I saw many people pointing to the starter solenoid relay. Found it on the bike, wiggled it around, bike started. Ever the optimist, I hoped that replacing the solenoid would solve the problem.

Well, it didn't. Got the brand-new universal solenoid installed, no start. Pushed the solenoid around, started up, ran through a couple of starts, and no luck. Any suggestions from the more mechanically-inclined?

Make sure all the battery cables are tight... and the earth one on both ends?! ... :thumb:

Sounds like  a dodgy wiring problem, you should check connections and possibly use a multimeter to check for continuity.

have a look at the connector which plugs into the starter relay, the terminals in mine was dirty and caused all kinds of electrical problems. :dunno_black:

Thanks for all the great tips! Unfortunately, my desire to do it myself has been beaten down by my lack of ability. I checked what I could, and I'm 99% certain it's somewhere in the wires from the relay to the starter motor. So, off to the shop I go.

Any clunking while cranking?  Could be the loose starter rotor bolt causing the crank to slip.

Have you checked the Clutch dis-engage switch? Its on the clutch handle under-side. Two screws hold it in. It prevents the starter from getting electrical current with the clutch handle out. A safety switch that slides to one side to make a connection and allow electrical current to flow to starter.

Can you give more details on "won't start"?

... is it cranking, but not turning over?
... is it a dead click?
... is it no response of any kind?
